  1. Don’t know what all the fuss is about Basso. He will be riding for Glasgow and Peterborough. That all that should corcern forum members as we’re not having to put up any money to pay for who he rides for.

  2. Riders are only an asset to a viable business and are only a paper value with no extraneous value so when the business goes the (Person) asset goes as well: My pals son played for a Scottish football team which went pop a few years back; he was worth £125k to £150K on paper and whilst the club were in Administration the Administrator tried to sell him for £25k to realise some cash to try and keep the place afloat; however no-one came in for him at that time knowing when the club went pop they would be able to obtain the boy for a lot less than even the £25k... how this scenario worked out was if any club had bought him he would have been entitled to a 5% signing on fee so £7.5k on the £150k valuation; and at £25k that dropped to £1,250 quid so he didn't really want to move either to be fair; so when the club went bust the Liquidators looked to strip the assets of the club; however People; Players; Employee's are not tangible assets of an entity or business so they move on and my pal's son did just that and got a £10k signing on fee off his new club; he got more cash than he would of even if sold at £150k and the purchasing club got him £16,250 quid cheaper than they would have done if they had bought him off the Administrator for £25k... Furthermore since "The Slavery Abolition Act of 1833" people are not allowed to own people its as simple as that; it gives a false impression that because riders (Players in Football) are assets of a club and the club owns their contracts that there is a value in them; however as stated that value is only there whilst the club are trading and should that business stop trading there is no value whatsoever in those assets to the folded business.. very simple analogy however I hope it explains why there were no riders listed as assets by the liquidator... The air fence is slightly different as it is a Tangible Asset however it is also what is known as a Depreciating Asset and as such represents how much of an asset's value has been used. Depreciating assets help companies earn revenue from an asset while potentially expensing a portion of its cost each year the asset is in use and it allows for a portion of the cost to be written off against tax. Depreciation is what happens when assets lose value over time until the value of the asset becomes zero, or negligible. Depreciation can happen to virtually any fixed asset, including office equipment, computers, machinery, buildings, and so on hence why the tractor and machinery were mentioned in the liquidators report as they had some value. Depreciation is intended to roughly reflect the actual consumption of the underlying asset, so that the carrying amount of the asset has been reduced to its salvage value by the time its useful life is over and you can sell a depreciated asset, however any profit relative to the item's depreciated price is a capital gain. ... So if you have wrote the item down against a tax liability over a period for example, to write down the cost of the Tractor to nothing and then you sold it for £1200, the entire selling price would be a taxable gain. So every asset has a useful life, which is an accounting estimate of how long that asset will last. ... This continues until the asset is fully depreciated. Assets get depreciated down to zero or to their salvage value, which is what the company thinks it could get for the asset at the end of its useful life and unless you had a trade in making Elephant condoms I am not sure what you would do with an Air Fence after 10 or so years. Although the amount of times that one has been punctured at Brough I am not sure Elephant condoms would be the best use for it. One simple example is that we have just bought a New VW Transporter for the business at circa £25k and our accountant writes these vehicles down by £5k each year so by year 5 with around 150k miles on the clock these vans are rated as being worthless to the business and if a liquidator came in tomorrow he would spend a couple of hours marketing the van and selling it for say £18 or £20k however if we went pop 5 years from now that van would be scrapped with a 2 minute phone call for £100 pounds as why would a liquidator whose fees are anything from £200 to £2000 pound per hour spend any more than a 20p phone call to get rid of it. So long response to a simple question; however an air fence which cost about £20k around 7 or 8 years back will have been well and truly written off by now and if the club had of went down the pan the liquidator would probably say to anyone who wanted it to take it to save him the cost of disposing of it. Wey hey Wee Nonce Troll McTrollface is back and doesn't understand what he has read and what the Eck he is on about as usual... lets just say if leaving the club with "a debt to HMRC of £158,048" which has been made reference too by the liquidator doesn't show the “mess” left by the previous promotion and that this debt does still exist? and if the collapsing of the old business by the new one doesn't also show that the “mess” left by the previous promotion existed I don't know what more information you require? you need to crawl back under that rock Biffa... Elephant Condom for @Wee Eck to stick his massive tool of a head in please... Regards THJ

  5. Success for Birmingham in 2022 is easy to measure. If they come to tapes for 2023, it's been a huge success.

  6. Ellis would be a good shout certainly he is local. I think his demands would be excessive though in terms of equipment and pay rates. Credit to the new Promotion who seem to be running a tight ship already; which is why I understand a few riders who've been offered silly (very silly in some cases) money elsewhere may have been lost. As I've said and will keep saying, it's imperative that this Promotion are here in 2023 and for many years after that!

  7. Given the fact we are lucky to have speedway, I think the Promotion have done a great job putting this team together. I would have been delighted to see Complin back in speedway full stop as his fantastic ability and massive kahoonas during a race was there to see on the track. But even more delighted it’s with a Diamonds race jacket. A team of racers and entertainers indeed.

  9. Apparently basso approached Glasgow and said it would be great if they could sign him on for 2022 season because he wanted to ride on a decent track with knowledgeable supporters but he was thankful to poole for being a stepping stone to better things Apparently

  10. It also has trophy cabinets :-) - no use for them in Glasgow , maybe you will re-instate the Scottish Cup if Edinburgh will give it back :-)

  11. Matt never announces until all 7 are signed and sealed - its been the same for a number of seasons - and then its 'drip-fed' to give the media maximum opportunity for coverage over the 'off-season'! As far as the rent situation is concerned, there is still an issue and its more down to various people's availability for a 'sit-down' rather than being a 'major' stumbling block!

  12. I feel bad even dignifying you with an answer... But things ain't that bad... If Lee can even get back to anywhere near the entertainer he used to be, he'll be a brilliant number 2 or number 4. Him and Max could ride either position then... Yeah, we not the strongest team in the league, but we have a team and for that I am grateful. We have so many entertaining riders, we may not win a lot, but we're never gonna give up 1. Bradley Wilson Dean 2. Lee Complin 3. Matthew Wethers 4. Max Clegg 5. Paul Starke 6. George Congreve 7. 18. Never a good time to announce the passing of a dear friend ( ken Davies ) who sadly passed away on the 11/12/2021.. ken was a avid supporter of the diamonds also an incredibly hard working former member of the Newcastle speedway supporters club committee & it's down to ken how the speedway club were allowed to be able to hold functions at the south gosforth club.. R.I.P ken you'll be greatly missed on the table near the speedway office every Sunday mate

  19. Agree. His record in the first 4 seasons of the BL was top class and he reached the World Final in 1967. However he dropped about 2 points on his average in 1969 and was at about a similar standard when he went to Cradley in 1970. Sadly, Lokeren meant that we never found out if he could ride himself out of this dip in form.

  20. 10 years retired is a long time, look at Crump last season. Would love to be proved wrong, but can't see how that is a good signing with over 6 points left.

  21. I think tarnishing Lee Complin with the same brush as Lewis Bridger is a bit harsh.
    2 points
  22. I just hope that Complin doesn't have a load of money thrown at him for new kit etc then packs up after a few weeks because the comeback hasn't been as good as in his head when more deserving riders could benefit from that level of sponsorship. Touch of the Bridgers comes to mind but as ever i hope to be proven wrong.

  28. I certainly remember that cup final against Ipswich…something like 55-23 or something ridiculous…The track looked weird and certainly rode weird, you didn’t need to slide the bike and the times were incredibly fast , but all set by Ipswich riders !….definitely one of the strangest meetings ever. Regarding Andy Campbell and Mark Courtney , they were Stuart Bamforth signings when he wanted young English riders ..Campbell had had a good Exeter season and was obviously great around Exeter but never really got the hang of Hyde Road….I remember being excited about Courtney coming as I thought he looked excellent for Leicester and would be a great signing but another one who never really got going for Belle Vue

  30. Totally agree,,, but not only off the van, locally produced stuff available all year round,,, support local business and stop filling the pockets of the billion pound companies just selling sh!te. It may mean getting a cook book out, but give it a go. Bet you know how to cook books?

  31. You're right it was frost and I believe coupled with it being slightly over-watered. It was a strange meeting, we had been absolutely annihilated in the league at Hyde Road a couple of months before but came up full of confidence after destroying Reading at Smallmead earlier in the week to win the league so didn't know what to expect. In the end it was a very easy Ipswich win. You mention Mort and PC being barely able to slide their bikes which is true yet Sanders, Knight Niemi and Cook had no problems, indeed (from memory) I think Richard Knight recorded one of the fastest times of the season during the meeting. A case of the home side caught out with unusual home track conditions and the away side just got on with it and rode it as they saw it? It was a shame it did end like that though, it could have been a truly classic final. Certainly the two best sides in the league, Belle Vue the strongest on paper against a confident Ipswich side on a roll. Two teams with some great racers in them. It is mad isn't it, having the showpiece event at that time of year when the weather is likely to be the winner? We did go out onto the track well after the meeting / bars closing and I can't ever remember seeing such deep ruts on a track. And after a few steps it felt like you had a couple of bricks strapped to your feet...

  38. I believe he's signed for the u24 squad which gives him different rules. He was approached by Redcar last year though so definitely isn't flying under the radar even in the UK!

  39. That’s no excuse, the village idiot Chapman is an ignorant bully boy who clearly thinks pushing and pulling people about is the right thing to do. Interesting that no one complied with his pathetic rant. The man is a disgrace to our sport.

  41. You’d think there needs to be a rule adjustment as a Prem no. 8 is unlikely to get many rides, if any. But with Mulford already signed up, it’s not fair to block him from riding NL when he’s only done 1 season and still has things to learn.

  42. I can't believe that they would sort a consortium to carry the club forward without having a product to sell.... I'm certain that they know/knew what riders would fit the bill.... The first 3 signings are all reasonable Championship riders.....so far, so good. Biggest surprise/disappointment is to lose Thomas.

  43. I agree with most of the above 2 posts. F1 used to have many or characters like Nigal Mansell love or hate him he was box office, similar with the late Ayrton Senna, like with the late Ivan Mauger people used to watch to see if he was beaten, and, like Ivan, he rarely was. Similar with Michael Scumacher. Now, in F1 there is Daniel Riccardo and that's about it, character-wise. I don't watch Moto-GP but am aware of Valentino Rossi and like the late Barry Sheene & his no.7, (heck we have lost so many motorsport greats) you see many bikes , cars, t-shirts etc carrying Rossi's no.46. We can discus all day the effect of TV on speedway, I won't ( can't be bothered TBH) but I'll give few interesting examples. More people used to be at least aware of speedway due to ITV's World OF Sport, folk would watch all day anyway and at 3.10pm speedway was be shown so they would see it. 1976 World Final, people said "wow wasn't that Peter Collins brilliant he just kept passing everybody". Yes. Yes, he was and he certainly did. 1977 WF, a wee youngter had the house to myself for once (yay!) and almost all of the heats were shown one Saturday on World Of Sport AND on BBC's Grandstand (I know !). Non fans told me how they saw "Ivan Mauger win in the pouring rain". 1978 WF, folk said "what a shame your Hull rider Ivan fell in his first race". 1979 WF, don't beleive it was shown on UK TV. 1980 WF, folk commented on Micheal Lee's win, an Englishman winning and another (Jessup) 2nd for change. 1981 Qualyfier at White City, Penhall v Carter pt1, "Penhall knocked him off !". 1981 WF, Wembley folk told me how exciting the meeting was & "that American guy won, he had some good races (well one) with Ole Olsen". Incedntally, thsi meeting was shown on ITV, literally a few hours after the actual meeting ended, whilst many fans were still travelling home, few had video recorders in those days I didn't get to see it on TV for months when a test match England v USAs at Poole was rained off. 1982 Qualyfier at White CIty, Penhall ran a last, with unfortunate wheelies thrown in, to help other Americans qualify for Los Angeles: "what were those Yanks playing at, fans threw bottles & cans at them onto the track ?!". 1982 WF, arguments on Penhall v Carter pt2 incedent, "he knocked him off again didn't he, but he won again". Hate saying it but Carter fell on his own, sad but true, but people still argue over it (and isn't it fun to do so?). Notice a pattern, by the way ? 1983 WF Norden Germany, few groups of heats, but not the entire meeting were shown, but spread throughout the day on BBC Grandstand, folk said to me "who is that guy who won, he just wiped the floor with everyone didn't he, but I've never heard of him ?". 'The Gundersen / Nielsen years' followed of course, great riders sure but not the characters, Mauger, Penhall, Carter, etc, were. In other words (finally): many of the characters / personalities have gone from the sport and you need to make the effort searching for speedway on TV channels to view it. So less viewing of the ridera & of the sport lead to less fans. Not a comprehensive analysis by any means but a few reasons....

  44. Yeah sorry wasn't clear. Courtney did drop around a point (?) off his average in 84, but that was still enough to have made him a heat leader in most teams. (In 85 when he joined KL he dropped another 2 to become a sub 6pt second string). The issue was, as you say, his away form (see also Larry, Andy and Peter Carr). At home they smashed teams - with the exception of the Premiership at home to Cradley (Finn Jensen!!!) and was it the league Cup or ko Cup against Ipswich?

  45. Struggling to grasp that you need to have 4h and 4a to get a proper average is mind blowing which he hasn’t. Whats difficult.

  46. 1000% it is needed.. There are enough contrived rules anyway so one more (that is currently so desperately required), wont be an issue.. As, in the past, some riders may decide not to ride where allocated but I would suggest that there isnt an "Ole Olsen" level of rider anymore who could hold away... And all seem keen to ride as much as possible these days, including taking as many guest bookings as they can, so none would have too many issues getting a guaranteed seasons racing I would think.. Maximum pay rates would certainly help deliver this too, with a maximum meeting payment for every club being the same for all.. There is no point saving teams without fixing the underlying issues why they needed saving in the first place.. As all you do there is prolong the inevitable for "whoever" is next..

  47. I wasn’t there but I understand it was just the twins and Rowe practising. Josh Bates was apparently due to join them (in an attempt to impress team managers yet to complete there 1 to 7) but apparently fell off his bike in the pits and on the advice of medics decided to call it a day despite luckily landing on his head.

  49. A rudderless ship without a suitable Captain, John, for far, far, too many years.. Crying out for someone to properly lead it... You only have to look at the threads for teams struggling to get a decent team together next year to see how ridiculous the whole operating model is.. The "collective" are desperate to keep as many clubs going as possible, (any Speedway must be seen as better than no Speedway), yet they dont ensure as a "collective" that every team has a fair chance of being successful. Yet they will use a supposed "team equality" mechanic which we all know to be far too subjective when it comes to previous riding numbers in the teams rode for, home track advantage of previous tracks, amount of meetings done, assessed averages depending on where you are from etc to be of any tangible accurate use.. Some teams next season in Division Two will, once again, have three heat leaders of a high level, (on a par with some in Div One given they will be the same riders), and other teams will end up with second strings having to take heat leader positions. The result? Well, we know that dont we? The teams using second strings as heat leaders will struggle at home and be dreadful away. However all will come to the tapes "relatively equal" and no doubt every team will talk up their side. "Strength in depth, always have a good reserve, all can put two points on their averages", etc etc etc.. What the "collective" (still after all these years of doing the same thing year in, year out), fail to grasp, is that unless EVERY track can be competitive then you will never move the sport organically forward... Getting visited by teams who are "cannon fodder" simply cannot be good for the host clubs business, yet they happily allow such things to happen... With the ultimate irony being that a few will throw hundreds of thousands of pounds into their teams to try and win something with only marginally more kudos than winning a meat raffle at the local British Legion. With the lack of kudos, financial rewards and publicity, all down to their very own operating model.. In short mate. No. The sport hasnt moved on.. (Over here).. In fact you would have to say that it has regressed a long, long way..
