I've only seen Celina ride once in the under 24 Ekstraliga and she was miles off the pace. However it's a much tougher league than the Championship and that was at the beginning of last season, she may have progressed since I'm guessing. Although Tate and Antti (Antti in particular) scored VERY well in that league so it's hard to say. I just hope that the second someone fairly criticizes her it's not labelled as sexist just because she's a girl and she's treated as any other rider would be (under performance = the boot). I can see there being lots of drama on upcoming Workington threads lol The signing I'm most excited by is Antti Vuolas.3 points

Very fast at northside?? She was 4 secs off the track record. And this will be a much harder league3 points

Just like to say all the posters from other teams who are recognising the effort of workington promotion Thank you and you are showing true love of the sport Most will know Steve lawson is a great bloke dont know Andrew personally but he is putting heart and sole into this project3 points

Quite possiblly... Meaning she will be similar to hundreds of others over the decades who have done the same.. The important message is the back story which will help sell Workington Speedway to an audience who will have their ears pricked up by what the promotion team have done.. And, if it doesnt all work out, then those who have been interested enough to go along, may still stick with the sport regardless of her being there or not.. Nothing to lose, and everything to gain by both rider and promoters.... Great to see some proper, modern thinking, promotion of the sport... Obviously, for some others, using "why not bring a friend?" as their marketing plan, is still available....3 points

Agree. With Comets moving up, they have a blank canvas. A club you would like to succeed. They are a breathe of fresh air. I emailed them and received a lovely reply.3 points

I certainly have now reading the funny comments on here i think lots of riders would pick Poole over Workington wouldn't they ? chance to win things, big crowd and the seaside got to admit where is Workington as for our new marquee signing let's give him a chance as it's a less demanding league this year he could be a trump card if he is rubbish I'm sure he won't last long but give him a chance3 points

Hi All Can someone explain this to me as a little confused. Tate as young Aussie if he had come straight from Aussie would have been a 4, but because he did 6 matches 23 rides in POL U24 in 2023 he becomes 5. Celina also an overseas rider rode in the same League also 6 matches - but 21 rides and comes in on a 4. Firstly best of luck to Celina, but can someone explain how she arrives on a 4 not a 5 ?2 points

Most teams will probably sign one in future years simply because of their gender which doesn't help at all it's just tokenism and is happening in all walks of life but I was hopeful that it would pass speedway by but i was obviously fooling myself. I'm not surprised by all the celebrations about this but I doubt that any of the male NDL riders who have missed out on a Championship place are happy. I seem to remember all the Edinburgh fans complaining about Dayle Wood at the expense of younger riders because he wasn't very good yet I guarantee he isn't any worse than the Comets new rider. So much for encouraging young British riders...2 points

Jacob Hook is a good example of a rider of that average, having seen him race at various tracks this year, and you may well use him, but there ain't many riders about on that average and of that calibre I suppose. I still think your under estimating Celina having witnessed her racing at Redcar earlier on this year and by signing Celina, I think Workington Speedway have certainly pulled a master stroke.2 points

Nobody knows how good or bad she will be and I'm sure a considerable part of her signing is for the publicity/exposure but let's at least give her a chance to show us what she can or can't do.1 point

I've seen lots of YouTube videos of young footballing prospects who all look like Pele but who in reality are pants. I saw her around Armadale in real life and she failed to convince me of her being worthy of a place in a Championship team. I'm trying to imagine her in a heat at Ashfield against Harris and Complin and if there's first bend bunching I'm covering my eyes.1 point

I believe there is some financial benefits to having a female in the team in the form of grants and funding, not sure how or how much someone just mentioned in a conversation. I'm sure somebody will enlighten or correct me.1 point

I used participate on this forum a lot a few years ago but reading some of this vicious and childish backbiting makes me realise why I stopped . Surely we can disagree on things about the sport we love without all this bickering ?1 point

speedway supporters are a fickle lot if they dont agree then this is what happens no wonder the sport is on its knees1 point

Boughen also had a league meeting later that day and just done the 4 laps basically. Compared to when he was there for Stuart robsons meeting where he was doing 56.0, if also using her times at Redcar she’s 2/2.5 seconds slower than a heat team there.1 point

Nice to see fans of other teams taking an active interest of whats going on at worky, hope to see you all when your team comes to northside, I know I will be at your tracks cheering on the comets1 point

And times when riding pretty much on your own are irrelevant. Plus seeing the track for the very first time and riding on the outside is going to be much longer. 400m track on the outside. The track is set up totally different on these days with 40+ heats. Heat times were also around this on the last home NDL meeting Just real lazy comments If you wanna compare times she went round Redcar in 57.5 two weeks later and that was quicker than any of Ashton Boughen’s wins that day1 point

This sort of thing has happened for years, Kolodziej doesn't get a wild card for GPs (despite his average in Extraliga, plus 2nd in Euro Champs) because of his age / nationality, Kai Huckenbeck gets a GP wildcard because of his Nationality, last year's GP reserves were all picked because of their Nationalities, Chris Harris dropped from the GB squad because of his age. Now gender has become another reason to pick someone along with nationality / age, ahead of ability.1 point

Gilkes especially, improved every year despite injuries hindering him. If I was Edinburgh I'd pick him ahead of Fredriksen, depends if he wants to travel / have more availability at Weekends for Poland?1 point

Nothing stopping any of them coming out as "trans", or identifying themselves as a female....1 point

It really doesnt matter if it turns out that way.. Any semi decent marketeer will see the huge opportunity for a bit of hype and publicity to get your name out there off the back of it... And NASCAR has tens of thousands of fans already at each venue, so bringing in a female racer wouldnt have meant tens of thousands more.. (And given the following demographic of NASCAR if may have even turned a few away)... Worky would be delighted with just an extra couple of hundred on the opening night I am sure, as that would be circa 20- 30% more than a "usual" crowd I would imagine.. A very healthy uplift given the small starting point at most tracks..1 point

The point I'm trying to put across keeping in mind that we are only talking about the title of this page "Oxford" is last season the Chargers were a success & were declared the champions. The development of some riders means they can no longer race at this level & must move up. This seasons squad as was pointed out is 2 points under the starting limit with some youngsters that have limited track time under competition & it has been mentioned that this is a weak team & will harm the attendance levels. My ideal is this league should be used as a production opperation for young British riders we only need to look back to Tai Woofinden in his early days at Scunthorpe to see that it can work & I see the Oxford system to use riders from their lowest squad to fill reserve places in the higher league then into the main team & now into the top league thus developing their talents rather than buy in a half baked star from overseas.1 point

We will wait and see which cook turns up, I think this year we will see the British champion ex GP rider Craig cook turn up and in the diluted league he will be one of the top riders, looking forward to the comets southern tour to beat the pirates at home UTC1 point

Great signing for the Comets, very impressed when she was at worky earlier on in the season, very stylish and fast on borrowed machinery, looking at other teams reserves on here she will be in the top 3 reserves in the league imo1 point

Really strong team but Paco will definitely be back and it appears we’ve maybe dithered too much and Borke has been offered a team place elsewhere.1 point

For a few years, since the bad weather has caused play-offs to have been ridden in terrible weather in October / November, there's been some calls for teams to start with the league then run "extra" competitions after. I think the jubilee league has shown how that would not work! You can be sure teams would make far more effort to put on a play-off final than a jubilee league etc final. Worse comes to worse, can do what the NL may have done & declare top of the "qualifying" league as champions. At least the BSN trophy, has been shown more respect than the jubilee league was, clubs not wanting to bite the hand that feeds them!1 point
