They have completely ruined the world cup week format. back in the day it was a brilliant spectacle , even if the racing was gate and go it was still exciting and well attended. this new format is absolutely pathetic. why oh why do they change things that arent broken but any thing broken they do nothing about?4 points

That's almost certainly one of the worst SON/SWC meetings I've ever had the misfortune to watch. Dreadful. My main takeaways from that were: a) don't host anything in Poland that doesn't directly involve Poland - who knew? b) don't host one of the flagship international meetings of the season in October - who knew? c) if you're going to televise a meeting in a 20,000 seat arena when there are 14 people in attendance, maybe don't continually show drone shots of said arena, highlighting the 19,986 empty seats. d) if the rules allow team managers to chop and change riders and gate positions at the drop of a hat, for christ's sake let the commentator know. I don't need to hear Kelvin telling us he "thinks" it's rider X or he's "fairly sure" Rider Y is on gate 1 - it's amateurish. Other than that, it wasn't bad, some decent racing.3 points

Only in speedway could a team accrue more points in the main meeting such as Ukraine and the team with fewer points in the Czech Republic qualifies for the final. No wonder few take this two wheeled sport seriously.2 points

Fernando Garcia always dreamt of being a speedway rider and when he was younger he lied to his parents telling them an English club gave him a contract. He had little money but packed his bags and flew to England, he messaged loads of teams asking for a contract. He had no vehicle or place to stay so first night slept in the airport, then next night in a hotel and then when his money was lower (funds for travel) he slept for a week in a train station. He got a message for a guest booking with Berwick and then asked if he had a bike so he said yes, although he didn’t so he found an old speedway rider and bought his bike for cheap, after that he then realised he didn’t have a way of getting the bike to the track so the old speedway riders dad sold him his old van. He completed his first guest booking scoring 3+1, but Berwick then said the injured rider was back to fitness so he wasn’t required. He went back to the old van to sleep and lived off just apples and some fruit from a garden for three days, his phone died and he thought he would call it a day and sell everything and go home telling his family it didn’t work out, when he went to a petrol station to charge his phone Berwick messaged him offering him a contract and with that he lived and rode for various teams for 6 years. The only reason he finished speedway in England was because of covid and he had to move back to Argentina.2 points

I think football is going down the same path extending the teams in the world cup to include minority nations that are only going to be cannon fodder for the established nations.2 points

I don't get the obsession with Ekstraliga averages - Kolodziej and Ben Cook for example have been near the top in those lists but neither have made it into the GPs on a regular basis. Kurtz wasn't even riding in that league when he qualified via the GP challenge in 2024 was he? No-one knows how a rider may perform, if it was all about averages and assessments why have a competition at all? It'd just be nice to see some new battles, not just the same old troupe.2 points

If that was the reason Monarchs lost, I'd keep that to myself. I'd rather say "we were beaten by the better team, than "we didn't pay attention to track grading" 🤭2 points

They should stick to the 4 man Team formula, even though the lesser Nations don’t have International standard riders their lesser riders are the same standard which produced some decent racing between them. This pairs Semi-Finals just need to be scrapped.2 points

In my opinion if Mr Tophat did take it over don’t have Mr Roger’s involvement in it because it will close end of season with him running things So my message being get rid run it yourself then speedway will stay2 points

Not me, I’ve spoke out about holta and even some polish riders were not happy about him riding as a pole, I even refused to go to a British final where Rory Schlien rode, in my book when you have represented your country in an official event you shouldn’t be allowed to race for another country, loram and woffinden have never tried to swap nations2 points

Like you say same every year. Easy solution strict time limit on rain offs replays ( even if it means missing riders).Teams are now racing about 14 fixtures in 6 months it’s pathetic they can’t fit them in.IMO.2 points

Lots of interesting and some irrelevant comments on here again at the end of another season of British Speedway. Hung up my programme board a few seasons ago I admit, and the demise of the few remaining clubs in the southeast of England didn't help ..... but isnt the problem that there is a lack of supporters who have an interest in the sport in the UK ? Too many other competing calls on people's leisure time . Blame who you like for the slow demise of the sport in the UK, but the bottom line is not enought people will pay to watch it.1 point

Lawrence is bringing Buxton back so all his time will be there. So tolley whereever he goes will be going it alone 👀1 point

Good post. Your first sentence nails the sports biggest problem in my opinion. Doubling up has got out of control. One league is not the answer as there would be a number of riders who would consider quitting the sport if their earnings were impacted, unless they sought other jobs to supplement their income. On top of this there is the likely situation of GP level riders giving the UK a miss if fixed race nights are to be relaxed. Admittedly I’ve said nothing new and don’t have the answers, but then again I’m not Harry Redknapp!1 point

Sheffield New Owners successful local business operators with close links to Sheffield Speedway and the sport in general. 3 parties come to mind. Ian Hunter from Sheffield Window Centre former Sheffield Speedway Sponsors. The Stead Family. Ashley and Jonno Birks. Possibly a consortium involving all or some of these.1 point

Front page of tomorrow's Speedway Star seems to be suggesting a possible revival of Buxton in the NL.1 point

I did say whatever it takes to get both teams in the top flight should be looked at. You fail to see that this isn’t a one league problem. Without top flight standard riders dropping down or doubling up there wouldn’t be a 2nd tier neither! I don’t believe that the top flight has been living well beyond its means at all. Top stars are usually paid mostly thru sponsorship so whilst costs are higher in the top flight it’s foolish to say all top flight clubs can’t sustain a business. The likes of Nigel Tolley are very few and far between. Most of them are very successful business people who manage to make speedway work for them most seasons. So let’s stop saying the top flight is the problem league because this is a UK speedway issue.1 point

What ever happened to that other 16 year old sensation from a few years back, Ratarubbishz or something like that?1 point

And with that 'gone list' those that are left include: Kildemand (36), Craig Cook (38), Sedgmen (34), Palm Toft (35), Harris (43), Masters (34), Lawson (40), Kerr (35), Barker (37), Nicholls (47), Wright (38), King (39), Worrall (34), Simon Lambert (37), Batchelor (38), Iversen (43) That's almost all of what would effectively be the top group of riders. If people think they can just about manage to find enough riders to sustain one league now, what about in 3 or 5 years?1 point

As people have pointed out, one big league of 14 teams with 7 man teams would be impossible. Take out the 25ish riders who ride in Poland (and are only available to Britain on Monday and Thursday) and reduce all the doubling-up riders to a single team (another 30+ riders) and you've barely got enough riders left to staff 14 teams of 3 or 4 riders. You'd need to take every rider from the National League, including every novice 3.00 NDL wobbler, and you still couldn't get to 14 full teams. The standard or 14 teams would be somewhere between Championship and NDL. The level would be a big comedown for Workington or Plymouth fans. Imagine asking fans of Belle Vue, Ipswich or Sheffield to watch that!1 point

The latest issue coming from the club is that they are still obviously in debt but are having loans from various parties offering them the money, the issue comes with the city council who need to act as a guarantor. They don’t need to give any more but are reluctant to accept the guarantor venture due to not yet being provided the debt plan from Stal, Stal have one month to provide all documentation for the loans so the city will accept the guarantor status, only then will Ekstraliga provide their 2026 licence to run.1 point

Point D It’s amateurish because Kelv and Chris sat in a London studio is amateurish. Should be at the track for the 4 meetings and with a commentary position right over the start line he surely could see by himself without waiting for the drone to fly away and a shot of the start line shown. He could also see the exclusion lights clearly.1 point

There is simply no way that a semi final for the SoN should be in an empty stadium. Absolutely ridiculous. 😡 Any first time viewer will have been appalled, let alone us as speedway fans. Tickets should have been given out free to schoolkids, local residents, charities etc. While it wouldn't have created anywhere near a full house, it would still have looked better on tv than looking at the 50 fans that were there dotted around the stadium. Unacceptable.1 point

If they stay up they will compete, they have a debt but an accepted debt by the league which has a multi year plan to pay it back. The issue is with relegation, this is what the club fear will bankrupt them.1 point

Sheffield's defeat of Ipswich on Thursday wasn't just a victory, it was a complete drubbing. This Ipswich side weren't just "playing it safe," they've lost their bottle. Leicester will make mincemeat of this shower in the finals (and rightly so!) For finishing top of the table, contrary to popular belief, you DO win something: you win the honour and respect of everyone in the sport and a sense of pride in a job well done. For that, the riders, staff and fans of Sheffield Speedway can rightfully feel joy and satisfaction in their 2025 exertions. The annals of history will forever show that Sheffield were top of the heap in 2025, despite the crooked blunt-force play-off system that clearly fails to reflect the year-long performance and achievement. So who knows, given the present circumstances, 2025 may turn out to be Sheffield's swan-song. But if we don't come to the tapes in 2026 we'll at least be assured that we went out on top.1 point

No, it is definitely not a joke. As I posted earlier, I lost my Track in 1964 and 1974. I am still very bitter about the way it happened, both in 1964 and 1974. You get to love a Sport and it is taken from you - it is no joke and certainly not funny. I sympathise with the Supporters with every Club that has gone, or will go to the wall. Even if Sunderland returned net Season, it is too late for me, I could not attend. It upsets me very much the way Speedway, our Sport, is shrinking. When one can see what has happened at Cradley Heath, Coventry, Peterborough, Wolverhampton, Wimbledon, Hull, Newcastle, Swindon et al - to me it is tragic. These were all great Teams years ago. I know I am getting on in years and some will say (not all I hope) that I am a silly old duffer living in the past. There is an old saying: "The past is another Country; they do thing differently there". Quote attributed to L. P. Hartley.1 point

Matt Ford was someone well ahead of the curve... He realised that he could run 2nd tier Speedway using around three quarters of 1st tier riders... Thus charging less for pretty much the same product... Yet, plenty seem to moan about him....??? Maybe more Matt Ford's and the sport would be far more pro active and successful?1 point
