Derwent Park..update on Town RL forum

In the Speedway Star this week Tony Jackson seemed quite hopeful that Speedway would return in 2020, personally I don’t share his optimism. -

Speedway in 2020 was never going to happen, unless a multi millionaire came in and built a track from scratch. -

In an interview with Chris Morton in this weeks Speedway Star he emphasised that promoters must put the fans first and foremost giving them value for money and to be treated properly . -

Rob Godfrey interview in Speedway Star

Agree with this post, with the greatest of respect to Mr Godfrey but he seems to be out of touch with what has happened to British Speedway, the problems have been highlighted by fans fo years. Regarding the fixture pile ups at the end of the season , the same thing happens almost annually. -
Sounds like two new promoters could be the ones to take over from Ford after this season.

Time British Speedway went AMATEUR
topaz325 replied to TonyMac's topic in Speedway News and Discussions
I am disappointed that Workington has closed but hardly surprised, I am shocked that it has kept going for so long really. The crowds have been falling for years, even when Keith Denham sold it the crowds were poor, so I knew it was just a matter of time when the losses could not be taken any more. Do I think it will return, very doubtful, an ageing stadium that is possibly going to be developed/demolished and the money to revive it stated at £50k to £100k. Do not know what the future holds for the sport in this country, the riders want big money to cover ever increasing costs but the attendances are not there at many tracks, maybe one or two in the Premiership but even the best set ups at Belle vue and Glasgow in the Championship are reporting poor crowds at some meetings. -
Sad day for many Workington fans and Speedway fans in general, in my opinion Workington was one of the better tracks to watch and race Speedway in the country. Feel sorry for the riders as well, many have invested and planned for Championship racing in 2019, some like Wilson Dean and Worrall have the Premier League to fall back on but must have budgeted for Championship income as well. Unfortunately it was just a matter of time before the plug was pulled after many years of falling attendances. Once its gone its gone. Started going to Derwent Park in 1978 when my brother in law took myself and my brother along and have stood on the second bend ever since (apart from the break from the mid eighties to 1999), the noise, the smell, the speed , oh and the weekly pie and oxo. Och well its Glasgow , Belle Vue, the odd trip to Cardiff and a few European GP,s now. Give us a "C". I wish you well.
