They closed in 2018 because it wasn't viable, they've tried to reopen and are finding again that it's not viable. This is a genuine question that I don’t know the answer to. if it is making a profit then that shuts up R87. if not, then that brings into question if having “ the second best track in the UK” actually matters along with what is required to make such a venue viable. Please no one tell them about Workington - who have crowds of about 200 and had to shut their doors a few weeks ago despite being this so-called brilliant track. buckie
As a lifelong Birmingham supporter, I wish Swindon folk every possible success in their efforts to revive the Robins. I have just been shown a copy of the leaflet beind distributed by the "opposition" and fully agree that it contains a great deal of inaccuracies especially the noise levels ("Can be heard from 10 miles away" "As loud as an aeroplane" etc) which are patently untrue, and which will need to be challenged. I'd suggest forming a group to formulate an alternative leaflet which could contain all the true facts - noise testing will disprove the "excessive noise" claim. Speedway bikes do not use petrol or diesel - they use methanol which is non- polutive, non- toxic and emits no smell. Speedway matches would be limited to once a week starting at 7.30pm and continuing until 10pm with 15 one-minute races of o ly four riders. etc. etc. etc. It will be a mistake to try to belittle what the Nimby's are claiming. We have to remember that the vast majority of the people living within the vicinity of the site will know little or nothing about speedway and will find it difficult to distinguish fact from deliberate fiction. so the more information that they can be provided with. the better the prospect of getting a planning consent. I was heavilly involved with the battle to obtain a planning consent at Birmingham in 2007, and know from experience that the hard core opponents will never see reason, but on the other hand, the majority will tend to be reasonable if they are civilly approached. The very best of luck to you. T

The very best of luck to you. T It’s refreshing to have a positive post like yours amidst the negative doom and gloom often heard from certain individuals. I’m sure there are members of this forum who are in touch with the Swindon Needs Speedway group, who are still primarily focussed on retaining the Abbey Stadium. They can convey your thoughts and advice when approaching the planning process for this new venue. As you say, people will say anything to put a spanner in the works, so I’m sure I remember University of Central England complaining about the noise from the speedway putting their students off studying (this was in November/December!) ouch
Apologies if this is already on here but I’ve just registered my support for this via https://development.wiltshire.gov.uk/pr/s/planning-application/a0iQ300000FdUf7IAF/pl202506229?tabset-8903c=3 It can only help. RWB is being dumped on by what Swindon doesn’t want. More traffic, more pollution, more flooding in the area and disruption for the wildlife and everything the canal and all the volunteers have worked for (not sure walkers, riders and local wildlife and nesting birds and swans will appreciate the awful noise of a speedway and revving bikes). It’s not just the speedway but the go karting as well which will be noisy and also cause a lot of traffic in an already dangerous roundabout and road system. These posts are so boring, it is the same few people whinging in support of it and just attacking anyone they can who says anything against it (who funnily enough are all speedway racers looking at their pictures) they want to ruin it for the rest of us in our lovely town and people who actually value the countryside and cutting down on traffic in our area. If they had spent as much time complaining about the stadium not being rebuilt where it was originally then maybe something would have been done sooner and they would have their old stadium back in their original site rather than letting a developer buy them off and put it elsewhere. Please go to the planning portal to say what a dreadful idea this is for the environment, for the traffic and for local business at this site and make Swindon council take responsibility force the developers to build it where is was previously and not palm it off on RWB.
