Well considering the population of Workington is approx 25,000 and neighbours Whitehaven similar I think the speedway lady promoter did well during her reign. Comets first appeared for the west Cumbrian sporting public in 1970,,,a reported crowd of 6,000 came to watch, This spell of male promoters lasted 12 seasons. Glasgow came to use the track in mid eighties ( can't be bothered to check proper date), Then Messrs Thomas and Mole brought Stoney and co. to Derwent Park in 1999 - this time the opening event only saw 4,000 attend, cough, cough. With the final chapter of this era being in 2018 (history and all that ). So yes Laura took over running Comets for the final handful of seasons at the previous venue, and she did very well compared to other promoters without squaring circles at all.

To say that team speedway is not viable in Workington is an unfair comment given that a great many clubs have folded and re-appeared on several occasions down the years - some from cities way bigger than little 'Worky'..e.g.Newcastle (where are they now ?)..Oxford, Sheffield. Barrow....oh I give up!!!!......

I think that is it, we all give up! Speedway has had its head in the sand for many years. I love (or loved speedway), but I do feel the game is up, in its current guise, here in the UK.

Compulsory Strike Off of a company is typically done by Companies House as a result of the Company failing to submit/file the necessary paperwork (I e. confirmation statements and/or accounts). The failure to submit this information is a failure of the company Director(s).

Companies House give companies plenty of notices for submitting the relevant paperwork.

This, as has been said by others, is NOT an HMRC/Tax matter.

If, in this case, Companies House have struck off Northside as a result of failing to submit the necessary returns, this would be a criminal offence (of the company Director(s), which is likely to be the reason for radio silence whilst trying to sort it out.

Why this resulted in the riders being banned from guesting for other teams is unclear...

I agree with you, Ray.

I sincerely hope we are both wrong, and that the phoenix may yet arise from the ashes.

The population of the Workington/Whitehaven/Maryport/Cockermouth conurbation is around 70,000.

The population of Berwick-on-Tweed is only 12,000. with no larger town or city for 60 miles.

Speedway has survived continuously in Berwick for 57 years.     Whatever the reason for the ebb and flow of speedway appreciation in Workington, it isn't lack of population.

Too many other semi or professional sporting attractions in and around the worky area, and lots of local rugby of both codes that get a reasonable following, where not much in or around the Berwick area, unless you like to watch crops grow

There’s quite a lot of other sport in easy reach of Berwick. Especially if you like bike racing. Lots of rugby clubs about, there’s also that big green thing in the middle of the speedway track.

Can remember a good few years ago now, but both Eastbourne and Glasgow did northern/southern tours all travelling in a coach with seats taken out to put bikes etc in . Riders mechanics and management all travelling together

Glasgow also had a van to transport all the bikes and equipment to away matches.

Yeah she did. But nothing different to those who ran the club before her. Or indeed just like so many failed speedway promoters throughout the country!

Yeah Berwick are a top speedway fraternity.

They have had their wobbly moments over the years!

We certainly have but surviving being homeless and bouncing back, showed how important it meant to have speedway in Berwick.

Oh yes! I had forgotten that you were exiled to Beddington Loch/Lock for a few years (I think that was the name), before returning to your spirital home!
