Ben Barker posted on Facebook yesterday evening that he still hasn’t heard from Rob Godfrey and if he doesn’t hear back in the next few days he will be whistleblowing and lifting the lid on other issues.

Oh Good!!!

Now. Which Popcorn to have?

Decisions. Decisions...:D

Not too sure, a Facebook comment came from Andy Harrison, probably Luke's dad 😄

We informed the insurance company that Luke races a speedway bike . The insurance we have covers his loss of earnings from his actual job as a scaffolder which he does everyday except for the day he is racing or if he has a busy schedule when bikes need to be prepped. Not sure if the cover would be the same if speedway was the only source of income

I hope Connor Coles was sufficiently insured!

Thanks for the info

One of the big issues around this is the lack of clarity - at least it is if you are a supporter

Are you able to provide any of the clarity that shows the difference between last year and this (for Luke) such as:

- Was the change for 2026 communicated to riders, and if so, when?

- In 2025 was rider's personal accident insurance included within Luke's contract and did he have to pay that on a per race basis? (it's been suggested riders were paying £5 per race, deducted from their points money)

- In 2026 is personal accident insurance included in Luke's contract at all? If not, is he making a £5 per race 'saving', allowing this to be used to purchase the policy that Luke has taken out this year?

- Does the policy that Luke has taken out this year provide comparable personal accident insurance to what was provided through his contract, or per race deduction last season?

I appreciate very much that you may feel that it is not appropriate that you provide this information, but given the complete absence of relevant comment made by either BSPL or SCB, the speculation and potentially ill informed comment is just going to continue.

Much appreciated

We received an email regarding an uplift in the cost of our licence which we queried and were told it was as the emailed stated for insurance purposes the uplift was duly paid.

previously he had ridden on a pounds for points contract which included insurance no visible deductions were made from his wage

the personal cover was assumed to be in the contract but we felt this had been transferred to the ACU with the uplift on the cost of licence

dont know about previous coverage as we never claimed and the coverage taken covers his losses as a scaffolder not as a speedway rider as scaffolding is his primary source of income . Speedway is a paid hobby at his level covering its cost with the aid of our wonderful sponsors.

i don't mind telling people what I know from our point of view but everyone has different circumstances and our experience could be a different one too others

Thanks for the update and for being so open.

From that it sounds like you received no explicit guidance about the change in insurance levels, and only as a result of the annual licence application - and because Luke hadn't previously had a specific deduction to cover insurance you didn't know what the difference was between the insurance cost in 2025 and the extra licence cost in 2026 - I've seen a figure of £28 mentioned.

On the face of it, and unless Luke has had an uplift in his points money to reflect it, then it seems like the club is making a saving ( if it is no longer making insurance premium payments), and Luke has incurred an extra cost as he has had to take out an additional policy to provide a level of income protection against loss of income if he is unable to do his scaffolding job.

I of course do appreciate that you can only comment on Luke's position and not on others, but if we assume a lot of riders are in the same position then it is understandable that Ben Barker is really pushing this. By the same token, were I a rider, I would not ride without taking out a personal policy as Luke has done, because the risk is too great.

I very much hope that BSPL / SCB issues a much more transparent statement, with a chronology of events which can be substantiated with evidence - and that this dispute can be brought to a conclusion that sees riders in a comparable position to previous seasons without any significant cost issue.

Thanks again for taking the time to provide some clarity, albeit as you rightly say, with the caveat that this is how it applies to Luke

There's a story in the national news at the moment about somebody not being told information and the person who didn't pass on that information has been sacked 🤔

From Ben Barker

Firstly, I want to make it absolutely clear that I have no problem with the Speedway Control Bureau and Auto Cycle Union. They have done nothing untoward.
In the close season, the riders were told they had to pay an extra £28 for their ACU licence. That was, we were told, to cover for an extra insurance policy.
From the research I have done, this is what I believe has happened. When that was suggested by the ACU, BSPL chairman Rob Godfrey decided the riders don’t need to be insured by the clubs. Therefore it saved the clubs a load of money per season. I’m not sure of the exact amount, but around £4,000 per club.
When this issue was first raised by me at Poole on Good Friday, Mr Godfrey stated in Speedway Star on April 11 that “Ben Barker has caused a panic for nothing. The insurance policy has not been withdrawn, it has been replaced”.
Subsequently, it’s been clear that ACU insurance was inferior to the old Race Insurance. This had led to the clubs covering their own riders to quell any fears, Ipswich and Redcar have announced this publicly, while a couple of other clubs have done so privately.
Just over a week ago, the BSPL issued a new insurance policy which is inferior to the previous Race Insurance we had with the BSPL.
The old cover for an injured rider was £225 a week, 14-day excess period and up to 52 weeks of payments.
The new cover is now £150 a week, 14-day excess period and only up to 26 weeks of payments. It is nowhere near good enough to what we had previously.
But it was a clear admission of wrongdoing by the BSPL that they had to re-issue a new insurance despite claiming I had caused “panic for nothing”. That wasn’t true.
There has been no apology or explanation to how the season was started with riders not having appropriate insurance.
Four riders were injured during that period; Niels-Kristian Iversen, Charles Wright, Tobias Thomsen and Vinnie Foord.
That is clear negligence from the BSPL. That needs to be explained and who made those decisions which have cost the injured riders dearly.
We need transparency about the people who made the decisions and whether we need changes in the people running the BSPL. Someone has to take responsibility for the mistakes that have been made.
This is such a serious issue. The riders’ welfare has been overlooked in a terrible way.
There are even more serious issues regarding this insurance issue. I will go into them at a later point.
If it get 1000 likes 500 shares ill give a £50 voucher of the winners choice

He's only gone and bloody done it... and well done to him for speaking out... he's not telling us anything we don't already know that the BSPL chairman is rotten to the core (Quelle surprise) and desperately needs replacing, it's just a shame that it's taken this to get any rider to speak out about it... and the mind boggles as to the other goings on that we have never heard about... the BSPL makes Fifa look like the Salvation Army!

In any normal business such a "s**t show" would see the person in charge/therefore responsible, being removed from their post wouldn't it?...

It is UK Speedway though...
