Ryan Douglas Testimonial

Thought that was quite enjoyable for a testimonial meeting 👍🏻 -
What a week I've had. At Leicester on Monday. The Lions get my support while I wait for Brandon to reopen. And watching them claw their way back to win by 90-89 was sensational. The tension waiting for heat 15 to start was palpable. The feeling waiting for the rerun to start after the Tigers had made the start first time round was almost unbearable. And for Max to fly off gate 4 to seal the deal was truly memorable (apologies to all my Yorkshire pals). Then to sit down and watch Glasgow Edinburgh on BSN last night was another treat. A hard fought meeting which either side could have won. But to achieve a 10 point swing in 3 heats is hard to argue with. So any lingering doubts that the play offs are a good idea have been banished, from my mind at least. P.S. The delight continues. I saw Dougy win his testimonial tonight and I'm off to Torun on Tuesday to see GB win the SON (I can dream).

What will 2026 UK speedway bring?
enotian replied to Lionsman66's topic in SGB Premiership Speedway League
In one sense that's the ethos of sport. Doing everything you can to win. But you're right it has to be something worth winning. Modern audiences and importantly sponsors are no long impressed by a title alone. Many sports now think about the product. They realise the sport itself is in competition with other sports and other leisure activities so it has to be entertaining. It's all sports entertainment now not just wrestling. I don't think UK speedway has caught on. Win at home and everything will be alright is some of the most short sighted strategic choice of all time. Set the track to benefit the home team doesn't matter if it's entertaining the masses just need to see the home team win. Then rules which favour teams who can afford the best riders then complaining about how much the best riders cost. Of course they do you've made them invaluable. Of course home spectators want to win but if there's no jeopardy where's the joy. -
I came up last night as a neutral and I was not disappointed with what was put on show, good racing, a great crowd and a great atmosphere. The referee had a shocker, it was speedway shambles at its finest in heat 1 at the rerun with Palovaara never mind in heat 7, hats off to Kye for coming out and getting the better of Bomber in the rerun. It was completely predictable heading into heat 13 that Glasgow would walk away the victors, Edinburgh needed to be at least ten up going into the last 3. Max Perry was the match winner though, he stepped up big time with Nagel struggling and deserves all the plaudits.

I understand some people have very strong opinions on play offs but I think without them our sport would be even less interesting to many people, they provide drama and no doubt a very important stream of income for a lot of teams. I went up to Glasgow last night as a neutral purely and simply on the basis of it being in the balance and with the hope of a dramatic meeting which was delivered in droves going all the way down to a last heat decider. The place was absolutely packed, programmes sold out by the time I arrived, I’m sorry but if you remove the play offs you lose all that. Those that say that more people might attend league meetings if it counts more towards a league title may be discounting the fact that teams on the edge of the play off bubble these days may lose crowds because by August they’d be out of the title race and nothing to play for, with this system most teams have something to race for for most of the season.

Comets did not have the gating gloves on again today and been like that much of the season.Berwick 4 top point scorers all looked good and nice to see Jye get back on his bike so soon after a fall. Not much to be happy about today at least the weather held out but started to turn nasty after 3 heats of the second half.Next season I think they need a bit more consistency as to many riders off song at different times. -
GP line-up for 2026

There are only three wildcard picks, so you’ve got to lose one of them. -
The simple mathematical truth is that there are insufficient riders of competitive quality to make up the number of teams you suggest are being considered for “one league”.

What will 2026 UK speedway bring?

The whole system isnt fit for purpose Dean... Promoters will spend literally hundreds of thousands on riders, whose names will resonate hardly one iota locally with anyone outside the Speedway bubble. . Yet hardly anything in comparison to their riders on marketing locally which may bring fans in.. Simon Lambert? Robert Lambert? To the vast majority of the country, neither are known... They then also seriously undermine their own competitions with a series of self inficted, completely foreseeable issues, which often then result in some contrived, Mickey Mouse solution, which does nothing but further alienate an ever growing number of a frustrated fanbase . Self undermined competitions by the way that they then pay out huge money (in relation to the sports level of following) to try and win!! At the very peak of the sports success, only the very top riders had the financial packages to be fully pro... Now even some NDL riders see themselves as pro Speedway riders .. A ludicrous operating and business model has been allowed to grow unchecked for decades . However its probably too late now to reign it in and control it collectively I would imagine... As there will always be at least one promoter who will spend big to satisfy their longing for a trophy that their very own organisation does it's level best to devalue.
