norbold 7,154 Posted June 19, 2023 Yes, very sad news. He was a regular at the annual Norwich WSRA Dinner, so I met him many times over the last 20 years or so. A really nice bloke always happy to chat about his Yarmouth and Norwich days.

BOBBATH 467 Posted June 22, 2023 Sorry to read about this. I recall Billy in the first year of BL (1965) I seem to recall he rode for Sheffield Tigers in that great speedway year. A nice and approachable guy.

steve roberts 9,247 Posted August 6, 2023 Both his sons Ray and Andrew both rode and Ray had a useful career especially when he moved to Mildenhall after a couple of lean years at King's Lynn. I believe that Billy's name was Raymond but he was always referred to as Billy?

I believe that Billy's name was Raymond but he was always referred to as Billy? His name was Raymond Arthur Bales. Apparently, when he first started at Norwich, Stars manager Dicky Wise could never remember "Raymond", and started calling him "Billy". It just stuck...
