https://britishspeedway.co.uk/major-events/comets-stage-u21-qualifier/ COMETS STAGE U21 QUALIFIER SATURDAY, JANUARY 21, 2023 WORKINGTON are to stage the 2023 British Under-21 Qualifier, with the meeting set for Sunday May 28. The new Northside venue takes on the event which has been run at Mildenhall over the past two seasons, and British Youth boss Neil Vatcher has thanked the Comets’ management team of Andrew Bain and James Denham for their assistance. Vatcher said: “It has not been easy juggling the fixtures to make sure that the Qualifier has a full line-up without riders missing their club fixtures, so I am really pleased that this has been arranged on a day when there are no other fixtures. “With the way Workington have built their team for the 2023 season full of young British riders, they are sure to have a large representation on the day, which will be great for the home support.” The full line-up and the seeded riders for the British Under-21 Final will be announced at the Young Lions presentation event taking place at the Nuneaton Speedway Supporters Club on Saturday February 11.7 points

A quick search of North Somerset planning site reveals an application for speedway was submitted and refused ... ..in 1972. Nothing more recent. Like you I think this is mostly fiction.2 points

Frankly that is just nonsense. There are controls and oversights in place to prevent such things.2 points

I'd like to see some more detail about the legitimacy of this claim. Given the size of the proposal, excluding the speedway element, I find it unlikely that two Councillors would have delegated authority to dismiss such a proposal without further reference to a designated Committee or without Legal oversight of the process2 points

Just for the record I spend a lot of time in Devon in the summer and have followed the Devils and Gladiators since Exeter closed.2 points

So a news item from BBC Cornwall about a situation in Devon being commented on by someone supposedly from the Midlands and trolling Dorset in general and Poole Speedway in particular!!!! You couldn't make it up - Oh but you did!!!2 points

Agree with much has been said, social media and van and bike display pre season, rider competitions and raffles to win kit such as team shirts , race jackets, make sponsorship simple even small amounts to help club/riders to be part of the whole team ethic.2 points

Agree that 3 is the easiest position for a heatleader to improve his average but why move Tom there in August when his GSA over the last ten meetings, which presumably will be used for 2024 team building, will get inflated. If Ben starts the season at 3, it wouldn't be hard for him to top our GSA averages and then have to go to number 1. Did Poole rotate their heat leaders through the 3 position, stopping any one of them getting too high? May be we should do this?2 points

It's amazing isn't it! We're all hoping for sayfintinov holder and puff the magic dragon. We'll probably end up with Lionel Blair and a celebrity dog act!2 points

So to conclude all 3 have now done 2 full seasons in the championship. Cook is the lowest average of the 3 but is the best of the 3. Makes completely logical sense if you’ve got blue and white specs with scull and crossbones on them I suppose.2 points

Not a Glasgow fan as such but travelled up to the GP Qualifer last August. Would really like your team to do well this year and hopefully get that league title at long last. Good luck.2 points

You must be the only person not to have heard that Emil and Artem Laguta are being allowed to ride in Poland- this was decided in November. They have been issued Polish licences.1 point

Been to a handful of Championship tracks, and not to lick our own backsides here... but Scunnys burgers and pies are so much better than everywhere else I've been, at very reasonable prices too... Quite enjoy Redcar's food also1 point

They were based on the Woodstock Road in Oxford and was very local in its content...I knew some of the presenters (both speedway and otherwise). I have some DVDs of the meetings that they covered.1 point

Correction. Glasgow Tigers now have it listed as 12:00 on Sunday 9 April. Source: https://glasgowtigers.co.uk/the-2023-fixtures-list/ @westlakejawa1 point

We also enjoyed a local TV station who showed home meetings plus the occasionally away but for the life of me I can't remember what it was called? Don't think that it exists anymore? There was also the local commercial Radio Station FoxFM (think they sponsored the Junior Team?) which gave service to the speedway.1 point

Or perhaps he'd rather sign for Ipswich for more money if the Emil deal falls through. If Buster isn't really involved in the day to day running of the Panthers as I suspect then I don't think Holder would be put off riding at the EoES.1 point

Well I noted there was a new post on the Plymouth thread so clicked in expecting it to announce their final rider (as their website doesn't appear to have been updated since the Starke signing!!!) but stifled a smirk at the BBC Cornwall story and then saw the usual bullrubbish so couldn't resist.1 point

Me neither, I'm down for Hans to become team manager or assistant team manager under Rob Lyon, Just don't want him as a rider tbh. Kenny Bjerre is my first choice as well because he knows the track, Nicki Pedersen is my second choice and I would buy a season ticket just to watch him tbh.1 point
-
To be honest I’ve no issue with this, Hans is great in the pits (2021 final) so that certainly wouldn’t be the end of the world. Hoping Kenneth Bjerre is on his way back. And pedersen over rasser make sense money wise1 point
-
It's a very long shot like 20/1 but does anyone think Hans Andersen could be the team manager rather than a rider? I thought it was interesting that Rob Lyon didn't get a mention in yesterday's press release when everyone else on the management side of things did.1 point

That’s not surprising. You should have seen him on big wide grass tracks. I have his DVD . He was a true motorcycle enthusiast. A great rider who was too scatterbrained to reach his true potential ( that’s not a criticism , it’s just life.). It seems his second wife straightened him out a lot but his best years were behind him by then.1 point

We were fortunate at Oxford that Track Presenter, Peter York, also had a regular programme on Radio Oxford so the speedway got lots of air time and interviews with riders and with Promoter Bernard Crappper in particular. The Oxford Mail, with John Gaisford, also gave the sport a high profile in the city and beyond.1 point

I hope there is some thought behind it too, and here's mine. You put Brennan at 3 there's at least a whole extra point going on his average. We won't have Basso back next season we were lucky to have him this year. Leave him at 3 let his average climb and switch in August to put Tom at 3, that is if we intend to keep Tom for 2024 and I would.1 point

Better have a look at your trophy cabinet to see if you can evict the spider's and clear the cobwebs1 point

Well, there won't be any racing on in those weeks, so it gives us something other than our usual fixture moans1 point

Thomson and Cook 2 full seasons (2021 and 2022) Brennan rode in 2019 but only raced 8 meetings and was out for the rest of the season due to serious injury. So basically all three have the same Championship experience.1 point

...recall one time Weymouth promoter Mervyn Stewkesbury driving round Weymouth with placards advertising the meeting due to take place that evening. I even remember seeing posters around Oxford/Eastbourne advertising the speedway...had one on my bedroom wall for years! Apparently Len Silver used to post adverts all around the Hackney area? I personally used to take friends/work colleagues to meetings in the hope that it would ignite a spark.1 point

What is this obsession with just recycling riders that rode in the Premiership last year? There are still plenty of other options who may be persuaded to race in the UK, if the price is right. For instance, Rasmus Jensen and Michael Jepson Jensen are not in the GPs this year and are well up to heat leader class over here. Kenneth Bjerre might even be persuaded to change his mind and return. Perhaps a more expensive option but it's not out of the question that one of the top Poles could be enticed to the UK. There are plenty of options still around, dependent on the amount of extra funding we might now have. Does anybody know whether Michael Jepson Jensen would come in on his old average of around 6.5 or would he be reassessed at 8.0?1 point

Course he is averaged over half a point less than both Brennan & Thomson without bonuses in 2022. Might well turn out better than those two but as things stand he's behind them.1 point

Knew I wasn't dreaming it! Remember going to the Foxhole in the afternoon full of optimism having dispatched the Twitches comfortably in the morning 54-36 with Henka Gustafsson scoring his first Lynn maximum, but the Stars were poor and Ipswich ran out deserved 48-41 (?) victors. Lynn put that right a year later though after a morning washout by wining 48-42 in enemy territory, Henka and Bo Brhel doing the main damage and securing the win with a heat fifteen 5-1.1 point

I understand the discussion about reducing the points limit to 40 was held at a BSPL Board meeting held on the day of the Championship Pairs at Oxford in August. Despite some substantial lobbying (not least by Poole and Glasgow) the reduction to 40 was ratified at the AGM,1 point

So how come Danny said he had informed the team who would and wouldn't be retained in 2023 incl Danny King PRIOR to the delayed second leg of the final against Leicester. That meeting was on 5th Nov before the Rugby AGM. He mentioned it had been a difficult decision to have to make. Believe this was partly why Kemp had such a strop on because he had already been informed he would not be part of the team in 2023. I believe Danny told the whole team prior to that meeting on 5th Nov that difficult decisions had to be made due to a reduced team points limit and he had been forced to make changes. Of course I could of misunderstood and as they were at 1.03 over the old 42 points that Kemp was the rider chosen to drop, but not how I read it at the time.1 point

Speedway continually shoots itself in the foot...tyres have been an issue for many decades (too narrow, too deep, different composition/manufacturer etc etc) You'd think it would have been sorted to everyone's satisfaction?1 point
