  3. I think I wrote all that needed to be said in my programme notes for the last meeting of 2014. I don’t like being cheated but even more importantly, I don’t like fans being cheated. But we were both royally shafted by Herr Wolbert - me in the pocket, the fans with the lacklustre performance on the track.

  5. So you think that those that have reached pension age haven't had to pay these costs throughout their lives ? Back in the 70's, interest rates for mortgages were in the region of 11% to 15 %. We just got on with it. Commuting ? My dad used to walk 5 miles to work to start at 6:00 am because there were no buses. Growing up I lived in a house with an outside toilet and no central heating. Today's pensioners have gone through a lot more than cosseted people like you ever will. So shut up.

  12. I just know clubs have spoken to him Lisa and Peterborough is not his 1st choice, but as previous post has suggested the 2nd baby also plays a huge part on what countries hes riding in this season. But i have to say as a dedicated Speedway fan, these new teams that are being built are very exciting, and long may it continue that riders like Bewley, Fricke, Doyle and hopefully others jump on the British Speedway bandwagon.

  13. My guess KK is returning as he thinks it’s going to be an easy pay day can’t think why else he’d want to ride in the UK .

  15. Sad to see the demise of my favourite magazines. I have read all of them from back to front. I do get other periodicals that I read the parts that interest me. The thing about Backtrack and Classic Speedway was that I read every single word. I will miss them very much - but - I do have every single copy of both to look back on, and, that at least is a great compensation. Thanks to Tony, Susie et al for all their hard work, they can be very proud of how their Magazines have enterained us over the years. In a very real sense I can say - - -- 'THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES'.

  16. EUREKA! I got my copy of THE BOOK today. I contacted the office of TonyMac on Wednesday, posted on Thursday, dropped (heavily) through the letterbox at lunchtime today, Friday. Looked at chapter headings for a chapter to read first….. I started off with chapter 26 “To the mechanics”. Why?. Although I only did grass track racing at club level I always appreciated the help of my “mechanic”…. the next door neighbour. Peter appreciated his mechanics, hence a chapter to them. Also, one of Peters mechanics was George Clarke, another one from Partington. He gave up racing grass track to be Peters mechanic. You will see him in the photo after Peter won the world championship in Katowice, the one with the black bushy sideburns. Heck of a nice guy, got cancer and died too young. When George gave up the grass racing I bought his 250 race bike. The frame was a Drury, that is made by Graham Drury’s dad. Good frame, and helped me to a different level. I like how the top of each page has a red/black/white banner…..Belle Vue colours. The rest of the book i am going to read in chapter number order, starting this evening.

  17. Understand what you are saying but it is not necessary the case. A ‘No.1’ may have an average of 0.01 above the next rider in their team. Couple that scenario with the other team and the case for having your best rider at No.1 appears a little weak. Just keep the two lowest average riders at 6 & 7 and let team managers sort the remaining rider order out (as in the good old days). Current heat permutations are geared towards protecting riders which is just an unfortunate reflection of an ability gap in the sport. In my opinion you are there to compete. It’s tough, but if you are dedicated you will stick at it to see how far you will go. I know there is a shortage of riders and some will only become NDL veterans, but ‘protected’ races is it a bit like a football match where only younger players can be tackled by other young players. If you are in the 1 to 7 of a team in whatever league, you should have to deal with it.

  19. Bickley needs to go for it this next season, he's stagnated after his fantastic junior years ....... I think he's technically good but he needs to ermmmmm how should I put it, grow some a bit larger than they already are lol Of course, who the hell am I to say that but all World Champs have to take risks at times, talent and a good brain aren't enough on their own ......

  21. Just announced today on Speedway News PL is Leszno U24 squad for 2023. Notice this season Keynan Rew will not be riding in the midweek U24 league (as he did in 2022 achieving the 2nd highest av of over 70 riders), as he has been loaned out to POL Nice 1 team Gdansk (normally ride on a Sunday). The relevance of this means he could ride in both Prem & Champ in UK in 2023. I have trawled through various forums on SWE and DK teams and 1) He has not resigned for his 2022 Dk team or anyone else and also not in SWE from what I can see. We know the Fords have been monitoring him as was rumored as a possible Poole signing before. Still only 19 and arguably the best Aussie coming through currently at U23 level ??, Assuming we would get him on a 5 due to his POL experience and also had a few odd rides as Leszno (POL Exl) number 8 last season, I reckon he would be a bargain. Could also be a long term prospect if Danny could get him as an asset with a loan out to say BV or Sheff in Prem on double up for this season ahead of proposed Poole move up in 2024. Just a thought.

  27. I would guess that as the majority of speedway fans are of pensionable age, including those on BSF, that for that reason the majority of responses would be to preserve the discount because of nothing other than motivated self-interest. I for one don't understand why pensioners should get discounts on luxuries like speedway and yet have to pay full whack on bread, milk, eggs and other "essentials". And why in the UK only? I've not seen any pensioner discounts at any of the speedway tracks I've been to on the continent. And then we have the matter of the clubs who are facing ever increasing running costs. And yet, over the course of a year, those who offer OAP discounts will be losing £xx,000's a year in revenue. That's a circle that has to be squared. OK, some penny-pinching pensioners may take the hump and stop going. The up side of that the less the terraces look like a Derby & Joan Club evening out, the more likely you are to find younger people coming to watch speedway instead. Swings and roundabouts on that score.

  31. All Championship teams are guaranteed a minimum 11 home meetings (8 league,1 KO cup,2regional) so if your team doesn't progress in either competitions you're only going to see 11 matches in 6 months which seems bonkers to me.

  32. Dave I may be wrong but when I & jacki Campbell were having a meeting well sort of in the winter months when he took it on his plans were decent but unfortunately COVID struck which basically crippled his plans & I'm not saying that he would have been good or bad for the diamonds ( which in the end ) turned out to be bad but at the end of the day he should have suspended it until at least 2024 saved some money up & went quietly about his business & bought a plot of land to build a new venue & we would probably still have a team to support now

  36. Les Collins winning a heat from the back in the 1994 KO Cup Final against Glasgow at Powderhall is one of the finest rides I’ve ever seen. Terrific rider who was robbed of a world championship.

  37. That is praise indeed, I've never seen any of the riders you mention at Ashfield but to be thought of as better from the back than Les Collins is some feat. When Les Collins was riding anywhere I saw him all I wanted was him to do was bring his Chris Morton gating gloves and then go out and chase the other 3 riders down. One of the finest riders I've been lucky enough to see in my 50ish years of watching the sport

  38. The base income from the state pension would be around £800 per month or £9600 per annum if you receive the full benefit. This is less than an employee earning the basic minimum wage if they work forty hours per week. Why is it unfair if the state pension is your only income?Take your local rates of say £175 per month and the current fuel prices of say £300 per month that leaves £325 to live on for four weeks to cover food, house insurance etc. and other day to day expenses and if you rent who knows what that cost would be. Not everyone is in the privileged position of having a private pension and other income on top of the state pension. If you rent your accommodation try covering all your overheads on just the state pension. It is not unfair but it depends on your personal circumstances.

  45. To answer your question: - When my wife was alive (she died in January), we were sensible enough to budget in the old fashioned way, of putting so much away each month for all the different utilities that we paid on an annual basis, plus so much for family birthday/Christmas presents, which was minimal compared to the other things. Now because the bills in the main, haven't started rolling in yet, when means tested, I was told I had to much money in the bank. I explained why it was there, but to them it's my money, which of course it is, until I have to hand it over to various people like British Gas, Anglian Water, Council Tax etc; etc: I can see now why years ago, when a Post Office Savings Account was the main way of keeping your money safe, many people used to stuff their money under the mattress, to coin a phrase, my father-in-law being one of them. But then of course, the country wasn't in the mess it is today, and we weren't ripped off by all and sundry.

  46. Y state pension is somewhat less than yours, circa £7200 pa, the wife’s is something less than that, approx £4500. Then I have a private pension, but totalled it is still less than a 40 hour week at minimum hourly rate. I appreciate how much more difficult it is for you….. are you not entitled to other benefits?
