https://britishspeedway.co.uk/major-events/comets-stage-u21-qualifier/ COMETS STAGE U21 QUALIFIER SATURDAY, JANUARY 21, 2023 WORKINGTON are to stage the 2023 British Under-21 Qualifier, with the meeting set for Sunday May 28. The new Northside venue takes on the event which has been run at Mildenhall over the past two seasons, and British Youth boss Neil Vatcher has thanked the Comets’ management team of Andrew Bain and James Denham for their assistance. Vatcher said: “It has not been easy juggling the fixtures to make sure that the Qualifier has a full line-up without riders missing their club fixtures, so I am really pleased that this has been arranged on a day when there are no other fixtures. “With the way Workington have built their team for the 2023 season full of young British riders, they are sure to have a large representation on the day, which will be great for the home support.” The full line-up and the seeded riders for the British Under-21 Final will be announced at the Young Lions presentation event taking place at the Nuneaton Speedway Supporters Club on Saturday February 11.7 points

A quick search of North Somerset planning site reveals an application for speedway was submitted and refused ... ..in 1972. Nothing more recent. Like you I think this is mostly fiction.2 points

Frankly that is just nonsense. There are controls and oversights in place to prevent such things.2 points

I'd like to see some more detail about the legitimacy of this claim. Given the size of the proposal, excluding the speedway element, I find it unlikely that two Councillors would have delegated authority to dismiss such a proposal without further reference to a designated Committee or without Legal oversight of the process2 points

So a news item from BBC Cornwall about a situation in Devon being commented on by someone supposedly from the Midlands and trolling Dorset in general and Poole Speedway in particular!!!! You couldn't make it up - Oh but you did!!!2 points

Agree with much has been said, social media and van and bike display pre season, rider competitions and raffles to win kit such as team shirts , race jackets, make sponsorship simple even small amounts to help club/riders to be part of the whole team ethic.2 points

Agree that 3 is the easiest position for a heatleader to improve his average but why move Tom there in August when his GSA over the last ten meetings, which presumably will be used for 2024 team building, will get inflated. If Ben starts the season at 3, it wouldn't be hard for him to top our GSA averages and then have to go to number 1. Did Poole rotate their heat leaders through the 3 position, stopping any one of them getting too high? May be we should do this?2 points

It's amazing isn't it! We're all hoping for sayfintinov holder and puff the magic dragon. We'll probably end up with Lionel Blair and a celebrity dog act!2 points

So to conclude all 3 have now done 2 full seasons in the championship. Cook is the lowest average of the 3 but is the best of the 3. Makes completely logical sense if you’ve got blue and white specs with scull and crossbones on them I suppose.2 points

Not a Glasgow fan as such but travelled up to the GP Qualifer last August. Would really like your team to do well this year and hopefully get that league title at long last. Good luck.2 points

You must be the only person not to have heard that Emil and Artem Laguta are being allowed to ride in Poland- this was decided in November. They have been issued Polish licences.1 point

Because Ipswich are professional and won’t announce til he has the clearance to ride in the uk. look pretty silly if they announce him and red tape stops him riding. emil has agreed terms and Ipswich want him but that’s only two thirds of the deal completed. The final third is getting through the red tape. that may take time but IiF it happens it will be a big coup for the premiership.1 point

We also enjoyed a local TV station who showed home meetings plus the occasionally away but for the life of me I can't remember what it was called? Don't think that it exists anymore? There was also the local commercial Radio Station FoxFM (think they sponsored the Junior Team?) which gave service to the speedway.1 point

I've always liked Keleher as i've often thought there was more to come from him but i think Tate is a bit like Pearson was last year, a little bit young at this stage of his development for the Championship. I could be wrong though.1 point

Or they were beaten by the better team? Not sure I'd call it a lottery, I get your point about the results of other teams, but that's sport basically.1 point

The location of the pub maybe a red herring. Someone in the picture maybe a relative of a former or current landlord or even customer. I think it’s a question to someone behind the bar.1 point

Team that avoids long term injuries has a good chance of winning. Once all teams are in place there isn't going to be alot left as replacements.1 point

We were fortunate at Oxford that Track Presenter, Peter York, also had a regular programme on Radio Oxford so the speedway got lots of air time and interviews with riders and with Promoter Bernard Crappper in particular. The Oxford Mail, with John Gaisford, also gave the sport a high profile in the city and beyond.1 point

I hope there is some thought behind it too, and here's mine. You put Brennan at 3 there's at least a whole extra point going on his average. We won't have Basso back next season we were lucky to have him this year. Leave him at 3 let his average climb and switch in August to put Tom at 3, that is if we intend to keep Tom for 2024 and I would.1 point

1959 was my first season at New Cross......although he didn't score maximums every week in that very short season he was spectacular in his style, don't think anyone could argue with that.......might be wrong but I think his only maximum that year was in the Tom Farndon Memorial....a fifteen pointer....you would certainly know better that I for that one.1 point

Agreed, but, most importantly, few sports suit social media as well as speedway could. Sometimes the simplest ideas can be the most effective when executed well... Edit Picked up wrong post to quote, should have been your latest one on here.1 point

Well, there won't be any racing on in those weeks, so it gives us something other than our usual fixture moans1 point

Youngie was a real master at New Cross. Although past his best by 1960, he was able to beat anyone at New Cross, including the "Big Five" and frequently did. I'm not sure I agree about Craven. I have to say I was never that impressed with him during my first two years of speedway (1960 & 1961) at New Cross and never thought he was in the same class as Fundin, Briggs and Ronnie Moore (and Youngie!) Of course he was but never seemed to be at New Cross.1 point

This was indeed Briggo's view. Bjorn Knutson, on the other hand, thought the quickest way round Custom House was the inside. To settle the matter they had a match race one evening with Bjorn off gate one and Briggo off gate three. Almost as soon as they started they swapped positions with Bjorn going round the outside of Briggo on the first two bends. The race was won by Bjorn, thus proving Briggo right!1 point

I can't see forcing every promoter, to stump up £20,000.00 (might have to be every year), will be music to the ears of promoters, who are likely losing money each season anyway. Marketing, I believe, with a bit of thought, can be achieved without huge expense. For a start, the riders should be prepared to market themselves during the season and without receiving a fee!, i.e. high streets, shopping malls. Make better use of local press, local radio stations, including the internet radio stations. Make use of fans to assist with marketing, such as, bring a friend/family member along for free. Have a track pick-up van with an advert attached to it, with perhaps a bike also on the van, driving around the locality a few days before each meeting. Just ideas!1 point

Course he is averaged over half a point less than both Brennan & Thomson without bonuses in 2022. Might well turn out better than those two but as things stand he's behind them.1 point

So how come Danny said he had informed the team who would and wouldn't be retained in 2023 incl Danny King PRIOR to the delayed second leg of the final against Leicester. That meeting was on 5th Nov before the Rugby AGM. He mentioned it had been a difficult decision to have to make. Believe this was partly why Kemp had such a strop on because he had already been informed he would not be part of the team in 2023. I believe Danny told the whole team prior to that meeting on 5th Nov that difficult decisions had to be made due to a reduced team points limit and he had been forced to make changes. Of course I could of misunderstood and as they were at 1.03 over the old 42 points that Kemp was the rider chosen to drop, but not how I read it at the time.1 point

Ipswich not releasing Tungate & Holder now potentially saying no, I'd say that's falling apart From Holder & Tungate to Worrall & Andersen is a disaster1 point

Be interesting to see how much coverage the Witches will now get in the local press. I think Mike Bacon will be a huge miss for the clubs and fans that follow his coverage.1 point

Speedway continually shoots itself in the foot...tyres have been an issue for many decades (too narrow, too deep, different composition/manufacturer etc etc) You'd think it would have been sorted to everyone's satisfaction?1 point

Should have said in my post above that is what should happen. Not what is happening. Apologies for any confusion! Nothing worse than a season ticket that doesn’t offer any form of enticement for having it. Not the same sport but my old Football League season ticket (dropped when it stopped being value for money) used to allow me to miss three or four games a season and still be getting a good deal. On top of that was priority cup tickets and other perks. Once I dropped the season ticket I then missed more and more games. Now I pick and choose. Bad move from the club who now miss out on my money completely, plus extras such as food and drinks. Better to have a discounted bum on a seat than no bum on a seat. Life happens and people will miss an event here and there. It’s important for Speedway promotions in particular to make sure they don’t lose out on a season ticket sale because one missed meeting would render the purchase of said season ticket pointless.1 point
