The referee on arrival is (i believe) responsible for the control and running of the meeting are they not?

That may very well be the case, even if it is it shouldn't be, as in most professional sports the meeting "Start Time" should be the advertised start time. The "start time" is mentioned a few times in the rules in reference to procedure, reporting and appeals etc. yet it doesn't state what the start time is, parade or tapes up and it doesn't say who is responsible. It's so simple it shouldn't be an issue, clubs should start, i.e tapes up, at their advertised time, if they want to hold a parade lasting 5, 10 or 15 minutes prior to that, it's entirely up to them and they should adjust their advertised start time accordingly... oh and have enough turnstiles open to allow easy entry.

Gambo
I arrived at the (half mile, or thereabouts) traffic queue at 6:45. They opened up the overflow car park just as I actually entered the stadium gates. I was directed to the overflow, and was the third car in there. Rather fortunately this allowed me fast exit after the meeting.

I stayed behind talking to some N'hampton fans (main topic - how quickly can we get rid of Klindt) and given it all decants onto one 'B' Road I was pleasantly surprised at how quickly the car park cleared. Speedway just appears an amateur sport in comparison to others

The promoters are not in the entertainment business, they are not marketeers, and definitely not in it "for the money".... They do their best given their limited capabilities to just "provide some Speedway".... Getting "professionals" in costs money, which means it won't happen.. People have too high an expectation of what the majority of promoters can deliver... You only have to see how they run the sport to know they don't have the required skill set to deliver what some fans see as "basic".... They do their best, and put their money in, and without them there wouldn't be any start time to moan about.... Last night's meeting at Northampton started at exactly 7.30. The show began with a parade of competing riders, introductions and the like. This over, racing commenced with the first heat going to the tapes at 7.45. Northampton is currently the best-attended speedway in Britain, so why shouldn't they show off their wares with a parade, etc? They advertise starting at 7.30, that's what they did .......
