  1. Dan Bewley could have rode in the UK this year very easily. All he had to do was NOT ride in Sweden, just like Doyle and J Holder. Bewley is as loyal to UK speedway as Lambert or Woffinden. He just didn't have a British Title to his name until a week ago

  2. It was germany that actually allowed him to progress, i wouldnt say this country really helped him at all.

  3. Yes it is a shame about Hume, he was good for us and has had a good season, nice guy too, I wish him every success in the future.

  4. Pure coincidence of course that both semi's are Monday v Thursday tracks.

  5. Not with only 10 home fixtures. Acceptance of mediocrity has allowed the sport to reach the heights to which it has now plummeted.

  7. Starke was always nailed on, and at reserve will be a serious force to be reckoned with. He goes very well at Poole. But I am sure the Pirates will be well up for this and it will be a very tight couple of meetings. Glasgow go into it as favourites and we need to hold them to 8-10 points to stand a chance of making the final.

  8. Some consider it to be a 'five-year plan' that is strictly adhered to... and then junked after Year #1 . Things were better when the AGM was a Spanish Piss-Up! At least then fans could understand the thought process that went into the next seasons 'life changing' turn for the better!

  9. For a team 10+ points stronger than the Royals in the averages i thought the Colts visit to Kent was shocking. Kent tracked 5 riders with an average lower than Hodders. As covered Ablitt was decent, Freeman solid and unfortunate and Smith would have posted a better tally had the track not been swimming wet for the first couple of races. Even with both McGurks looking very disinterested they still left with an away point so seems hard to believe they cannot manage similar at Armadale (and in fairness if the Colts don't get at least a point they don't deserve the play off spot).

  10. Edinburgh for me. As someone has already mentioned, they seem to be running into form at the right time. Can always count on Masters and Pickering for a bag full of points so I think a lot will depend on the contributions of Thomson and Castagna. Edinburgh are certainly the dark horses to be crowned champions.

  12. To be honest - and risking the wrath of a few folk - I always found watching league racing at Odsal a bit of an unsatisfactory experience. The place was just too big. To borrow a Jasper Carrott gag, I said to the bloke next to me "OI!" Much preferred The Shay.

  14. The match against Ipswich was supposed to be last Monday, so they would have completed their fixtures before the cut if not for circumstances beyond their control

  17. I suspect the weekend family business is a more sustainable way of paying his bills. Think they said he was on holiday for the Plymouth match. Fair play - nothing wrong with not constantly bending over backwards at the expense of your family.

  24. Yeh. Craig Cook looked really rusty last Sunday. Only managed third overall and beat Steve Worrall, Richard Lawson and Danny King (twice) in the process. I reckon he’s the danger man against Poole - he’s missed so many meeting this year through injury (and being dropped by Sheffield) that he’ll be looking to make as much money as possible.

  26. I would say we have a fair chance in this tie but should we make the final vs Poole then we would lose convincingly. Vs Glasgow it would be tighter but I think we’d still fall short.

  31. Monarchs have come into form at the right time with their less experienced riders now having had a full season. On the other hand, Leicester seem to have peaked and are on the way down, so I expect a comfortable win tonight, maybe 52-38 with a score in the 40s tomorrow to see them through to the final.

  32. all this paying the bills etc, doesn't really matter when so many riders are on a guarantee

  34. Whenever it is the Witches should aim to get as close to 15 points as possible With just 10 meetings making up 2023 averages 0 from 5 or 6 rides for a couple of riders will make a huge difference to how attractive they are as signings for next season...

  35. This is an Edinburgh v Leicester thread and Poole posters have taken over another thread. Anyway I fancy the Monarch’s for a narrow aggregate victory and the best derby in speedway awaits in the final.

  39. Back to the topic I predict a 49 to 41 monarchs win at armadale Then a 48 to 42 Lions win at Leicester. I just feel masters and pickering swing it home and away in key heats at the end.

  40. Surprised by the claims that the Speedway Star used to publish attendance figures. I have taken the Star from 1953 and don't ever remember seeing these printed in in. What I do remember though, is Tony Mole printing attendance figures for every Long Eaton home matches in the club's programme - and from what I understand, he was roundly criticised by his fellow promoters for doing this!

  41. If they wanted to be in the meeting they would be in it. Lambert had no problem getting over for the GP qualifier at Glasgow. If you want to be in it you would be . Once it's on the CV, job done. Will we see Bewley in it next year? It's got nothing to do with Brexit or logistics, it has everything to do with DESIRE

  44. But you don't need a crystal ball to see where we ALWAYS end up... ie cramming in meetings to complete a season... It will be the same next year, the same the year after that, and the year after that etc etc... Split the season into four sectors from April to November... 1. The "Cup" thingy. - 3 Home meetings per team and a another one for the two finalists. All done by the end of April... 2. The Premiership. - May to the first week of September. Meaning you run the play offs in the better weather and you take the most advantage of the kids being off school. 3. The Pairs - 2nd Week of September to October. Done in three weeks to keep fans interested. 4. All the rest - October. The League Riders Championships, The National Individual Finals, Any Testimonials, Any Individual Comps. That way you would keep interest in the Comps and also get some momentum fan wise through the year. Currently with all comps ending at the same time any succesful tracks cannot build on that success as their season often ends on the night of that success.... It also can mean fans forking out for five or six meetings within a one month salary window (regardless of following a succesful team), on colder evenings where they closely most monitor the weather forecasts, and even "light drizzle" will then keep them away... Sheffield are doing a "three match special" for £50 which highlights they recognise the issue so fair play to them... But not needed really if they all had a structure to their season...

  45. Exactly why it is best not to take it seriously and just watch the racing... It won't ever move on to become "mainstream" as it is so severely restricted by its operating model, which will always dissuade any major sponsors or media to get involved.. But it still can be a very decent night out if you take it at face value as being nothing much more than somewhat of a contrived, but entertaining and exciting, proposition..
