  3. Excellent post... Rozelle was initially a properly disliked Commissioner by many owners, (and some players with big personal sponsorship)... However, he knew that so many working in a "I am all right Jack" SILO, couldn't ever be successful for the sport overall... As he knew that one day the historically successful teams would end up playing themselves and no one else!! Which would mean sponsors and TV deserting in droves.. Sharing revenues equally, inc official merchandise regardless of which team sold most, and having national league sponsors front and centre, in front of any local, or personal agreements, (and sharing the money equally), saw the sport generically move forward... The historically big teams are still pretty much the same ones, as, organically they are the biggest, but the "cannon fodder" teams nowadays at least have a chance, and big money coming in from shared TV, merchandise and sponsorship agreements, regardless of position in their conference... A perfect blueprint for UK Speedway I would suggest... In fact, I suggested the same thing well over a decade ago on here!!! British Speedway should be "The Brand" with one overarching "leader" who is given complete autonomy, but held accountable by the owners, with every track being a franchise that can be lost if that franchise doesn't meet the standards expected of the overall generic business of "British Speedway Ltd"... All TV money, sponsorship and merchandise money, pooled with each team getting an equal share regardless of their own sales or TV matches... UK Speedway will fall together, if they don't work together as a collective...

  5. rule 324 subsection 32 part 4 appendix 13 any team causing he bspa to put out a generic statement and should there be a monday in the week and the away fixture from 2 weeks ago should result in a win for either team or a draw then the team will be deducted some points maybe 2 or 3 and sent to the naughty corner until they are really really sorry

  6. I think the important part is there should be absolutely no speculation or doubt. If a governing body of any sport imposes sanctions it should be very clearly explained. I have no interest in the now resolved issues at Workington but I am, and think everyone should be interested in clarity from the SCB regarding the points deduction. They should not be allowed to impose sanctions without explanation.

  8. With Jenkins in there it wouldn’t have been far off the rout from earlier in the season! More evidence of the extra banking working especially bend four. King used it to great effect a few times, similar to line Emil took a few weeks ago. Working a treat. King was fantastic. Aggressive and very very fast. You could see what that performance meant to him after heat 15! Full marks to the track staff as well, they got it spot on today. No blue groove and that’s because it was heavily watered which made conditions heavy and a bit tricky early on, but that had to be done on such a hot day.

  10. Spot on. it is just so very unlikely (and sad) that today’s UK promoters would go along with such a plan given the organisational structure that is the BSPA which in itself exists in a time warp.

  11. Post world war 2 there was a shortage of riders, they didn’t resort to doubling up, they just made sure there were plenty of training schools to make more riders. Do away with all this overpriced crap they have on bikes now, run them to a budget so costs come down. Make the sport semi pro, back in the NL days riders had other jobs, likes of Moggo rode speedway as a hobby and it didn’t do him any harm. The current setup doesn’t work and will never work, trying something else won’t kill the sport, it’s dying anyway.

  12. I agree with your sentiments. However, I’m not sure this type of drastic action will work out quite as well as we would hope becoming more of a ā€œdeath by a thousand cutsā€ rather than a cure for the problem. Preferring evolution rather than revolution I believe the best way forward would be the formation of a ā€œSuper Leagueā€ carved out of the best available riders making up a max of eight teams spread evenly across the country. Such teams/promotions committing to a clearly defined programme of continued improvement to the product on offer. The remaining promotions would work to fixed (low) budgets to run semi professional events the purpose being to provide a basis for growth in riders ability and worth to the senior clubs. Of course the biggest challenge the sport faces in the UK is the self serving, self preservation of individual promoters which exists to the detriment of our beloved sport. Frankly whilst that remains the case we can debate alternatives as much as we like but to no avail. There is history of a sport bankrupt in its own right, on its knees and run by self serving owners with no future which is now so big it boasts the single richest annual sporting event held on the planet. If anybody is interested in how that was achieved by the battles won by a single person against rich & powerful egos you should look up Pete Rozelle, who without there would be no NFL and no SuperBowl.

  13. The issue sits massively with what is defined as fit for purpose? Personally i want to be entertained so two teams with riders of close abilities on a track that offers passing opportunities and im happy. That used to exist at NL level and was sub £15. Watching the worlds best can be mesmerising but unless they have someone to race it can be dull as dishwater and the gulf between the top and bottom riders in teams is getting too vast. Top 100 in the world is a bit of a stretch when there is probably only a few thousand active riders of all ages worldwide anyways. For £30 you would need top level facilities (how many females don't attend simply because the state of the toilets) and an afternoon/evening of entertainment with passing, track craft, even a bit of controversy. The home hero, the pantomime villain, the stuff that gets people talking on the way home and wanting to see what happens in the next fixture. I certainly can't remember the last time i felt like that hence why i am one of the many who used to attend a lot of fixtures at various tracks and now barely go at all.

  14. Yes good to hear that the Comets have got whatever it was sorted, and are ready to get racing again. We can't afford to loose any more speedway clubs. Interested to see how Vinnie goes this season, many didn't want to see him leave the Pirates. Good luck to you on Saturday just don't win.

  16. Its good to see the comets are going to be racing again. I noticed that it was on the british speedway face book page and they had over 400 likes compared to other posts which only had about a hundred and something. I think i will go saturday and support the comets.

  18. To be honest Im reluctant to criticise Tatum as a commentator, as I've done commentary myself and it's not as easy as it looks. Its more the fact that he describes every televised meeting as "fabulous" when more than once it's been distinctly average. A few years ago, I remember watching the ashes on BT. During the tea break in one of the tests, the pundits had a good 15-20 minute debate about where they thought test cricket was and how things could be improved, how it could be marketed better and how they can make it more attractive to younger fans. You never see this type of discussion happening during speedway coverage and it frustrates me that all seem afraid of saying anything that doesn't "toe the line".

  24. I'm currently reading the late John Berry's book he was picked to be the head honcho in the late 80's and I reckon would have given it a good go but it all fell apart before it got started due to restrictions put on him from the get go.

  28. It definitely should. Know I’m an absolute bore but there should be no assumptions or guesses on this. I know speedway is worse than the masons for secrets but the SCB should be 100% transparent otherwise how can there be parity in speedway.

Agreed Phil few would be willing to host it and risk running at a loss, it doesn't help with Tai injured there's only really two strong riders Lambert and Bewley, did you used to go in the 80's & 90's when Coventry hosted generally pulled in a crowd of 10k plus and you had the likes of Wigg, Tatum, Cross, Havelock, Silver, Doncaster, Morton, Evitts all as contenders with another 4-5 as spoiler like Marvyn Cox great days.

  31. Where else would you hold a British GP or Speedway of Nations in the UK? The British Final yes share it around, also i dont think the Belle Vue owners are short of a bob or two thanks.

Massive thank you and a great amount of gratitude to the Facennas for helping out, hopefully the beginning of a very good partnership. Now everyone get down on Saturday and give Andrew, Steve and the comets the support they deserve. Yes, it hasn’t been made public what the issues have been behind the scenes, but, the people who need to know, know. Less of the name calling about people trying there best to keep the sport in our town and how about getting down and backing the boys. UTC ps where’s 2ndbend123 hiding at now with all his ā€œinformationā€??

  37. It's simple really. Ride speedway and get a job. There is not enough people coming through the gate to class it as a full time job. Reality has to hit with the riders. They've had to good for too long and look where its got us! Year after year one less club.The day they introduced d/u was the finish of speedway. Not only in pandering to the riders, but also the credibility of the sport, but then again there wasn't much credibility left!!!!

  38. Hi IAM sonnys dad ..the reason for sonny retiring is due to a lot off hard work taking it's toll on our family and it stopped being fun for all of us. I was starting work at 5 am getting home at 1900 and working on bikes most nights .until.2300 ..I was lucky that I have a good mechanic for sonny robin cousins who I pay as I have to work shifts as IAM a tanker driver on shell . We also was very lucky we had great engines GODDENS which sonny and Gary drake developed together which paid off .even no we have lots off great sponsors we are down 6000 pounds in costs to us.sonny has only made up to now 1200 pounds we no what most riders get in championship etc .I was told by a good friend that he got 35 per point in national league 10 plus years ago plus tyres and methanol .now we get 15 pounds no tyres no oil no methanol...this is down to the BSPL in my opinion they are killing the sport .I no off 7 other young riders that are going to quit the sport this year .we never expected to make money until he was good enough but didn't expect it to cost me more then riding in youth .I no off some riders dads spending 60000 plus a year to make 3000 ...this has turned into the sport I retired from Motorcross which has ended the same I wish everyone in the sport all the best and it was great once be a part off it but for team springer it's not sustainable..

  43. Probably unpopular but as a rebuild things need to be looked at from bottom up not top down. Restore the NL to a competitive league with better standard riders so the riders who move through it are a better quality when they move up. The other league is Champ Plus. A strengthened version of whats in place now with reserves having to have achieved a certain level at NL. Assessed riders to stay at higher averages 4/5 and Brits to get bigger end of season reductions to encourage use of home grown riders. Promotors genuinely need to sit together and build teams that are far more equal, there will always be teams that click or don't etc but it cannot be the case that year on year teams are getting bashed at home repeatedly. Its just bad for business on both sides and win at all costs when what's worth winning is questionable anyway is unnecessary. Build / re-build some rivalries, generate a bit of needle between teams. It can all be theatrics but it adds to the entertainment and gets buy in from fans. When riders, managers and owners are all one big happy family its boring, i want to see some rider passion, a manager stomping to the pit phone to rant at the ref thats all part of a show.

Not enough riders even for 5 man teams if you remove ā€œdoubling upā€ and those riders who race in Poland who would not be able to commit to fixtures held on any other day than Monday & the occasional Thursday - Poland permitting. Example, from the existing Leicester team four riders would be lost to the UK leaving 3 riders, a rising star, a number six and one second string. Granted if you draft in NDL second strings & similar you could get close to the required number but such dumbing down of rider talent & 10 man/boys meeting lineups is not the answer.

  48. The Championship already charges £20+ without those riders so not too much hope of a reduction. I don't think price is necessarily the issue, it's about perceived value for money

  49. Well personally my only experience of a groin injury was with a very nice lady in Bangor, well I say injury it was more of a nasty little rash.
