As there’s a couple of under 21 boys that are much better than he is. Don't really understand it myself, there's plenty stronger riders, Lawson, Harris, Howarth, Rowe, Edwards, doesn't have to be an U21 rider (unless they've changed the rules). The other thing I don't understand, is why announce an 8 man squad instead of the allowed 10, then add others to cover injuries, why not include them from the start, could be good for their confidence, rather than admitting to them, they're only a second choice option? Wasn’t sure if an under 21 rider was compulsory or not. Now I know for certain it’s not Cairns is a truly awful pick. Never mind a starting spot shouldn’t even be in the squad. GB management politically picking as usual rather than based on Skill. Would love to hear from them as to why he’s been included ahead of riders with double his current ability.

Happens for a certain team manager 😜

Col
Interesting that Ukraine & Germany have named their captains at reserve. Is there a maximum number of rides for reserves? Bewley & Lambert should be largely untroubled. Would have thought Dan Thompson would have been a better option than Leon Flint but I don't know either riders experience on Germany tracks. In this instance putting Lambert or Bewley at reserve wouldn't make any sense, all they'd be doing is replacing Cairns in all his rides - no advantage, the team could then be stuck if another rider got injured. If Dan T & Flint were promised 2 rides each, then you could have a stronger reserve to pick the best heats to benefit the team? Maybe that's why Dan preferred getting 2 matches for Edinburgh if he wasn't guaranteed 5 rides in the SWC qualifier?

Tinker
As others have said, I don't understand the choice of reserve at all. If things don't go to plan (bike issues, injuries etc) and we have to use our reserve the whole thing may end up being a disaster. Surely having someone like Harris, Lawson, Thompson or Edwards on standby would be a far better proposition. If we don't qualify for the final in August (and I've just bought tickets by the way), then heads will surely roll.

mikebv
A truly baffling decision... Team GB should be the best five riders the nation has... No disrespect but the young lad isn't anywhere near that level, even if you don't include Woffy... Maybe the many more experienced, (and better), GB riders turned down the meeting?.... Col
Guessing they're hoping that we'll breeze through and being at such an event will be good experience for Cairns. If one rider has to be U21 how many are? Flint, Dan Thompson, Rowe, Edwards, Jenkins etc are all too old now.
