IainB Posted yesterday at 06:40 PM Report Share Posted yesterday at 06:40 PM British Speedway is saddened to hear of the passing of former rider and promoter Brian Havelock. Brian, father of 1992 World Champion Gary, enjoyed a successful racing career of his own starting in the early 1970s, including spells with Newcastle, Workington and Middlesbrough. He went on to be team manager of both Newcastle and more latterly Redcar, where he also spent time as owner and promoter. Current Bears co-owner Ben Duffill paid tribute: โBrian was a huge character โ the kind of person who always leaves an impression on you. I have lots of fond memories of our time together. โThis is a very sad day for our club. His legacy will remain a lasting part of our history.โ

This is very sad news.ย Brian was a very good rider who put 100% effort in to everything he did. Riding, managing and promoting. He was a very tough Yorkshire man who was a regular attendee at our Sunderland Speedway Reunions. I got to chat to him a number of times, both at Redcar and at our Reunions. I respected him. My condolences go to his family and friends. R.I.P. + Brian. Yes, this was a straight copy and paste from the British Speedway press release.ย Brian Havelock was a bit before my time to remember as a rider, I remember him more of as a manager. Newcastle were never really a "glamour" club through my time following 2nd tier Speedway, so he never really resonated with me.ย My overriding memory of him was his appearance in a TV documentary commenting on the death of a rider (was it Wayne Garratt?). He certainly put a shift in to our sport as a rider, manager, promoter and fan and father.ย Condolences to all affected.ย

Havvy had about 4 very good seasons with the comets,ย latter to be team manager for various clubsย then making Redcar what it is now. Wild Man Vic
Condolences to Gary and the rest of the family on Brian's sad passing. Brian certainly left a positive impression with every club that he rode for and he always had the best interests of speedway in his heart after his retirement whether as a team manager or promoter. Whenever I caught up with him he always had time to chat about the sport - both the good and the bad things about it, and he was always good company. RIP Brian
