Surely they just pay rent per meeting? Therefore more meetings just means more rent to pay?

That's how the draft pick still works.      Any team can keep the same RS from the previous year, but anyone who needs/wants a new RS gets a pick starting with any newcomers and then from bottom of the league working upwards.

Yes the draft pick system when the RS idea was introduced a few years ago was based on where a team finished the previous season (as I recall/understand). This made perfect sense and is in line with the way American sport operates. Unfortunately, this idea was not enforced and soon evaporated. This is what disappoints me with the sport in this country. On the rare occasions that sensible ideas (as scarce as rocking horse rubbish) are introduced, they are seemingly dropped without reason.

When people on both sides of the fence are owed money after the season has finished then clearly we can’t afford it
