  1. The Ben Fund collection from last night has raised the incredible sum of £2168.

  2. How bloody arrogant and pompous. Let's go back to the good old days when 100 (older) people sat in a dilapidated stand and politely clapped. There are very few 'speedway' fans left. The days of visiting different tracks on a weekly basis and discussing the 'quality' of the racing and having a bevvy is long gone. But even back then you got disagreements and fans shouting at riders and referees. It was normal when there were big crowds. Look at some old videos of 'brilliant meetings' and you soon discover the racing was very average but the atmosphere was tremendous and the results sometimes unbelievable. The only way to increase crowds is to once again make it exciting, memorable and relevant and get people to buy into supporting a team. If that means booing the 'pantomime ' villain (Jack Millen anybody? ) then why not. It builds up atmosphere and gets kids to feel part of a 'team' and they then want to go again and bring their pals. Just go along and watch Glasgow Warriors rugby team who have steadily built up a strong and loyal following with lots of kids and guess what the players meet the fans after the match, pose for selfies, give autographs and every kid is wearing warriors tops, scarves, hats etc. Sound familiar?

  3. Head knock, felt groggy /not well. Suspect concussion, withdrawing was the right thing to do.

  4. With the apathy shown by the British Speedway Supporters, just thought I would give the Women a well deserved mention. Well done Rachel and Katie, superb effort.

  5. Possibly to do with the fact he knew Harris was faster and gave him absolutely no racing room on the outside, as he confirmed he would do in the track walk before the meeting. Harris then had to move to the inside line to try and pass, he makes a clean pass with no contact and Kemp either was unable to adapt or decided to bale out at that point.

  6. Every track has them unfortunately. Although since the take over at Glasgow , almost 10 years ago now , some of the newer fans have got that football supporter mentality and it is embarrassing at times

  7. Do you not eat on the other 6 days a week? If you sit down to watch Eastenders at tea time, do you add the cost of your meal to the cost of the TV licence and then rant at the BBC? The cost of food is purely your choice. If I go up to Manchester on a Monday, I just throw a sandwich together. So I probably spend less on food that night than I would for dinner on a non-speedway night. £61 for a family ticket seems decent value to me. But you could always go on the NSS back straight with a family for £46. That's £11.50 each. Try and go to a football match for £11.50. (And I won't even mention the cost of going to see Taylor Swift sing a few songs at a distance of 200 yards). Sometimes Speedway supporters are just big whingers.

  8. Family ticket 2 adults & 2 U16 £45. Have your tea at home before venturing out to the speedway if you don’t like the prices or use the van outside. Fail on your part due to bad planning. Fact.

  12. A bit like it use to be and who cares. Watch Mauger, Briggs and many others. Not some sanitised version of the sport you have today. It makes for entrainment and nothing else. Well done Scott for rolling back the years, long may it continue. If you want clean cut racing don’t watch speedway.

  13. If Klindt has only got a broken arm I'm sure he'll be thanking his lucky stars after that.

  14. Sadly, highly unlikely, people generally want to sit at home, watch Tv and have takeaway brought to them these days

  15. The problem with the whingers is that they still live in a past, surreal world where you could get the tram into town, buy three new suits, get blind drunk, go to the speedway, buy some bananas, go see George Formby at the Palace theatre, buy 4 stone of monkey nuts, and still have change out of a farthing. But some of us live in 2024. Great view on the back straight at Belle Vue, and £46 for a family ticket. Compare that with football. And I don't mean Manchester United and City. Try the lower leagues. e.g. Go to Burnley £45 for one person. Go to a concert instead? Next on at Co-Op Arena are "Pearl Jam". Cheapest tickets are £80.50 each. (It'll be even more for someone good). Oh, and it's £9.50 a pint. Look at that time when people paid a fortune to watch Wimbledon tennis, but it rained and they saw nothing and had to suffer Cliff Richard. Look at all those people who paid to see Nicki Minaj at Co-op but saw nothing because she was nicked for drugs. etc etc. One offs like this happen, especially with things like speedway, tennis, cricket which are dependent on weather. Of course if you're an old moaner, things are more expensive since we went decimal, but thankfully most of us live in the real world. But nobody's forcing you to go anywhere. I hear it's a lot warmer watching Barry Manilow at the Co-op. (But buy your Werthers Original at Home Bargains first). But his ticket prices may see the oldies off with a heart attack.

  16. Going with a bold prediction. Leicester finally put in a team performance and pick up a win at Belle Vue. Mountain scored poorly in both leagues last week so maybe he's hit a blip and I'm not sure BV can cover for Kurtz with Lidsey being way too hit and miss this season. As for Leicester, Dougie normally puts on a show around the NSS, Cookie should score a fair few at reserve and Fricke should put in a big performance on his former home track.

  18. Personally I don't think I'm doing them a disservice. To me, I'm actually doing the opposite. They compete equal to men, so can be judged in that way. It's not the same as, say, tennis or swimming, where the physical dofferences between male and female mean they have to compete separately. If I did a disservice to the other riders by assuming they weren't at her level then, in my defence, I did say 'presumably' as I don't know much about them. Having said that, Celina was unbeaten all meeting and that is what I, for one, expected. And if you think I'm somehow having a go at her, I should point out that she's probably my favourite rider at the moment and one of the few likely to get me to part with money and actually go to a meeting

  19. Completely agree, correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't the most publicised piece of media from last year, the Cookie and Basso Bust up. The excitement for the return leg when they were up against eachother, fans booing and cheering surely is what gives the meeting atmosphere. Comparing them to Football fans is a bit of a stretch, fans don't need to be separated by barriers or police officers and it's definitely not T-total at the speedway to stop any bust ups.

  21. And that attitude is why speedway is failing. Berwick fans pay good money to watch the sport they love, the club have a duty to fans and riders to produce a track that creates racing. During the football season I could understand track preparation being harder to do due to access, but the season has been finished for 6 weeks and that track was pitiful. Yes they have to make do with the shape of the track but absolutely no excuse for a bare, bumpy, one line track.

  29. Exactly my feelings. As much as I love seeing Ipswich win and competitive again after years. The thing that has me buzzed the most the last few seasons is having 1/2 of the best riders in the world at the club. I’d pay to watch Doyle and Emil race alone. Also bringing exciting young talents over like Rew always gets people interested. Speedway is has and always will predominantly be about entertainment and putting bums on seats as much as winning. Ipswich are a well run club and wouldn’t continue to persist to employ top riders (likely at significant outlay) if it isn’t of benefit to the club and the sport in the UK. The work the ipswich team/sponsors put into bringing Emil over here arguably made it possible for other clubs to start bringing back some of the bigger names.

  36. A good thing about speedway is that men and women compete equally so whether or not someone is transgender is irrelevant. Or at least it should be! So, presumably, there would be no issue with a transgender woman competing in this as they are still equal competitors.

  41. Never rated them from Day 1 but they're even surprising me with how poorly they've been performing as of late. Emil's even off it at the moment. Lublin at Home next, Followed by an away trip to Wroclaw so things could get very nervy for Torun in the coming weeks despite all of the good fortune they've had with other teams being ripped apart due to injuries to key riders.

  42. Or look at the piss poor version of what was once an enjoyable form of entertainment with decent crowds but has been allowed to be dictated by the woke society of speedway in terms of rules and pandering to the so called supporters who really do not support the sport or the club and the league which is not what it is solely about. No wonder club owners will not run open meetings with the finicky supporters who cannot see beyond league racing and wonder why British riders struggle. Years back open meetings were helpful to up and coming riders as well as established riders as it gave them track time and as an example Rye House ran a number of open meetings before the Rockets moved in . If you are old enough you know how good it could be but if you are one of today’s supporters who only can get the head around team/league racing and cannot understand individual meetings, four team tournaments, local derbies etc and have rarely seen team riding as well as appreciating promoters who actually promoted the sport (like Len Silver use to do) then you fall into the category of those who really do not get speedway. It had its positives and those should not be dismissed but it needs to move on and should entertain the punter and not be driven by some clear cut rigid rules. It should be fun but today’s version in the UK is dire. When it can emulate Poland and attract crowds that only U K clubs could dream of then you know it is on an upward trajectory but as it stands it has little to offer apart from topping up the salaries of a few overseas riders and as for the rest they should treat it as a part time hobby and ought to get a real job. It has lost its way in the UK

  48. I had the great honour of seeing Bjorn destroy the opposition week after week at West Ham in 1964. He was immaculate. However, over the period you mention, I would have to say that Ove was the dominant force, not just over Bjorn, but over every other rider. Now off to check the record books to see if they confirm my memory of those times.
