The three 3rd tier meetings in Poland last week had crowds over 3,500 with 5,000 the highest.. Germany had nearly 5,000 for their international meeting on the 5th of April.. Vastervik in Sweden averaged over 4,200 last season with the league just under a 3,000 average.. As you say, "where are we going wrong?".. We should do a poll on this forum asking how many on this forum actually go week in and week out supporting their club, I bet not as many as people think. And before people even think about talking about our tracks and quality, it’s the same people who moan about Polish tracks too. Maybe it’s because we are a nation full or moaners and negativity and instead of always having something bad to say… just get your arse to the nearest track and support your club. I rarely go anymore, I go to more to have a blast round than watch nowadays but it’s because I’ve got no track locally to me, the West Midlands was the center of British speedway and still has a huge fan base from wolves and even cradley but sadly now it has nothing and sadly this is the case for the majority of fans, they simply have no track to call home, I think more to the point is of those who still have a home track do they go ? I will this season, like last, attend more meetings overseas than in the UK... Why? Because I love watching Speedway... But love watching it more when (pardon the pun), something is "riding" on the outcome.. If the UK could deliver the same level of jeopardy, consequence and prestige in victory that other countries, and organisations do, then I would attend more in the UK... The sport now is very much followed by the die hards who will happily go along and collude with their promoters that the meeting is relevant and great to attend... Sadly, many, many more thousands than those who currently still go, don't agree with that outlook and have drifted away from attending regularly, but, crucially, haven't lost touch and still follow the sport... Given little is spent on attracting "newbies", through national marketing, getting those who still follow the sport back attending regularly really is the key to success... I am amazed no market research gets done so as to ascertain the thoughts of the regular fans and those who have lapsed... ie Why do you go? Why don't you go? Etc. etc.. There are dozens of fans Facebook pages that have current regulars and non regulars on them, which could be perfect to use .. When any business receives feedback, both good and bad, it can then make changes to the top reasons why the bad feedback was provided.. UK Speedway would benefit enormously from this... Living in Brighton, not really a track near me now. I went to Kent a few times last season and sponsor Vinnie Foord so when he gets back on a bike I will go and watch/help him out. Chris116
In my younger years I could travel by public transport to Wimbledon, West Ham, Hackney, Romford, Wembley, Rye House, New Cross, Crayford and White City for Speedway while Wimbledon, West Ham, Walthamstow, Crayford, White City, Rye House, New Cross, Harringay and for two meetings Wembley ran Stock Cars, Hot Rods and Bangers. That means oval racing happened at eleven different stadiums in London and everyone of them now lies under a housing estate or a shopping centre except for Rye House that is just derelict. To see Speedway I have to go to either Poole or Smallbrook but the last train to get back to London now leaves around 9pm while before COVID there were connections from services that left around 10.15pm. Result is I have not been to a speedway meeting since COVID. In the case of four wheel action the only tracks I can get to by public are Aldershot and Yarmouth. Aldershot requires a 30 minute walk from the station to the stadium which I do around six times a season. Yarmouth is just about possible but only in the case of afternoon meetings which are rare. The result of the loss of stadiums and transport options is that I have gone from seeing racing once or twice a week to once a month during the summer for Stock Cars and none at all for Speedway which make me very sad indeed.

You could do Oxford with relative ease, trains more or less to and from Marylebone, journey approx 80 mins and Paddington journey approx 55 mins. Trains run every 15 minutes give or take a minute or two. Trains to London run till 23:15 - 23:30. Get a 1 or 5 bus from outside the station which will take you to a stop, Longlands Rd which is about a 5 minute walk to the stadium. Buses run every 5-10 minutes. NDL meeting on sunday 26th April Chargers vs Middlesborough 3pm start, weather etc permitting, so you could see how easy the journey is with a lot more leeway for getting back to London. I feel like this perspective is shared by those running British speedway and in my opinion, it’s the biggest reason British speedway will die (as a competitive sport) in the not too distant future. Far too many people tolerate mediocrity and outright amateurish standards, accusing those (myself included) who demand standards and improvement as ”moaners” and ”negative”. We all want the same thing; British speedway to thrive, but I believe some of use are already anticipating what is coming while others bury their heads in the sand.
