Ipswich v. Northampton 6/8

Can someone explain to me how Ipswich got the rider rep facility for Lawson tonight as he was not injured or unwell?
it seems he chose not to ride as he was prioritising the health snd wellbeing of his family ( no criticism from me on that score).

i am assuming that it has been classified as withholding his services thus, the club get the faculty . If that is the case then does that mean Lawson now gets an automatic 28 day ban ?

not trying to point score against either Lawson or Ipswich, just asking a question and seeking a clarification

This link doesnt work for me!!

'I am not on drugs. I honestly cannot believe how horrible some people can be to assume that an absence is due to something like that.

First of all, I have a baby, this means I now choose to prioritise my child over speedway and for that matter over anything.

On this occasion of absence, my wife has damaged some nerves in her neck and cannot use her hand and arm properly, she received treatment and we tried to get someone to come to help her with Rio for the day. The treatment has not yet helped and we were unable to get anyone to help out.

Therefore! I chose to stay at home and look after both my wife and child.

I prefer to keep these things on a need to know basis but that just seems to let people run with their imaginations.

This year has really shown me how horrible some people can be.'

Why would anyone link it to taking drugs???..

His baby needed looking after and he had to do it due to nobody else being available...

A very common occurance when I  worked, several times myself I had to do it, and I went in work later once I had found someone to look after my kids..

Hard to go in later if there isn't the opportunity to do so....

These lads simply ride Speedway to earn money, it isn't some kind of emotional tie in for them, eg Kyle Howarth said he didn't miss not riding in the Final of one of only two competitions when he stopped riding before the second leg...

Some people seem to take UK Speedway very seriously, which baffles me...

If considered withholding services it should be 28 days

If accepted as a non speedway injury/illness type situation it should be 7 days

Think the main issue with Lawson yesterday was the timing of letting ipswich know

Despite his post saying they tried, at least give ipswich a heads up maybe that morning

"Hey boss, my wife isn't well, we're trying to arrange help but if we can't i will have to miss tonight and look after my child"

Not just phone a few hours before the meeting and drop it

I don't think anyone will argue that its right to prioritise your family over everything

However this situation doesnt seem to have just appeared out of nowhere at tea time and as a professional sportsman the very least expected would be timely communication

Informing the club only 2/3 hours before tapes up is unacceptable

Perhaps a bit more controversial/devil's advocate observation. Could the fact that he couldn't find any help from family/friends be linked to his general attitude and apparent ease of falling out with people? (Pure conjecture on my part)

After reading Lawsons statement, though,  I guess the rumor going round is false?

The rumor I heard was Lawson called Hurry to tell him he was going to be late and miss heat one, so Hurry called him a few expletives and Lawson turned round and went home.

Where would we all be without rumours?

His story just doesn't add up. As others have said he could have called in a lot earlier to say he was having problems.

Not good enough and not the first time. No respect for his club or team mates. If someone is available or about to become available then he needs to go.

Yes I kind of agree with this, however some people either don't think properly in a 'crisis' or don't often think that certain methods / reporting of obligations should be followed. As an employer I've had all manner of staff over the years fail to inform their employer / me of work availability for a range of things some frivolous some serious. Even when experiencing the most serious of problems I have always felt it proper to ensure my employers knew the situation as soon as possible and not just before I am due to get into work.

Regardless of last night I am 100% sure no Lawson for 2027 at Foxhall which is a shame as he has been a very consistent rider over the years and when he was at Arena he was a bit of a hero.

I think the only way Ipswich could have used R/R last night, was to claim Lawson was with-holding his services and a 28-day-ban should follow

All conjecture...

Maybe he did have a solution and that, for whatever reason didn't happen? Hence he then had to call later in the day?...

When my wife was ill the night before I was at work, I always waited till the next morning before making a decision given she may have improved...

I don't get fans almost taking a rider missing a meeting personally, no one will lose out more than the rider himself,  both on the night and possibly whilst serving a ban...

This may not go down well but playing devils advocate.

I think most of the Lawson backlash is driven due to his personality tbh.

A lot of fans didn't like him from Day 1 and last night's situation is just amunition to use as well as the Leicester drama.

As I said last night, The entire blame lies with Paul Hurry and Mayfield because if they listened to the overwhelming majority of fans after the Leicester fiasco then last night's fiasco wouldn't have occurred at all.

As the popular saying goes, Fool me once, Fool me twice.

Normally if a rider is ill, it's a 7 day suspension, but Jack Holder missed a match due to his children being ill & didn't get a suspension.

If that's the rule, everytime a rider is unwell, they could just say they're looking after unwell kids instead?
